Have you ever seen a CLEAVER like this!

What's the scale of the image? It actually looks like it could be fairly small. I agree that it looks like some kind of specialized (potentially medical or industrial) saw more than a cleaver.

I'm guessing that is a piece of copy paper (8.5" x 11") in the background so it's of reasonable size.

Some sort of medical equipment? Metal handle could mean that the entire thing could be autoclaved.

Hmmm...see if you can get them to write down the full markings on it. May be able to pull some info from there.

width at it's widest is 3 1/4 in., blade is 8 1/2 in., weighs 3 pounds. I checked out the patent number and even that only shows drawings no detailed description.

The blade thickness is apprx. 1/8th, they want 50 bucks and it's an hour and a half drive, worth the drive?

Not sure either.
It is a pull saw though. Which is kind of interesting.

I can't quite make out the name.
Do you know what it is?

The patent number (144737) corresponds to something about an Orthopedic table and fracture reducing apparatus from c. 1949

Not a cleaver, looks like a specialized saw of some type....

The blade looks to be replaceable.

You might have better luck over at Bernard Levines subforum.

The handle appears to be a casting. You can see the two thread holes where the blade section is affixed. It must be very esoteric and I'm not sure what you'd do with it.

Is that a putter for putting from the brush?

Just kidding - it definitely looks medical in nature.

best

Not medical, food prep/butchering....

St. Louis is a good clue.
