Have you ever worn out a liner lock on a high end knife ?

I'm thinking Spyderco's or Emerson's

Have you ever worn out a liner lock locking system on any such knives ? I understand that nothing lasts forever, but I'd guesstimate it'd take one heck of a long long long time to wear one of those.

I have a Benchmade Emerson that I carried daily and used hard from 1997 to 2007. Didn't wear it out the lock or come close. Blade is missing a lot of it's coating and it's been sharpened down a lot but the lock is still solid.

I'm glad you commented on this. Logic dictates that it'd require a lot of hard use for one to go through a liner lock (on a high end knife that is).

I've seen a Paramilitary with a comp lock that was worn down to around 80% when they're usually at around 30% new. Definitely possible if you use the knife hard for many years or are constantly opening the blade spydie-drop style.

I open my knives the regular non-conducive to premature wear style, most of the times.

I mean would anyone let a liner lock get that bad before sending it in?

Companies with good warranties will adjust your lockup for free.

My first and last Emerson, a CQC14's liner could disengage easily with moderate pressure applied to the spine. The knife was bought new with roughly a month's light usage. No spine whacks or anything that could remotely be considered abuse was done to this knife. I sent it back twice to Emerson but shortly thereafter each time the lock would fail again. I gave up after the second time and now it sits in my desk drawer.

That's too bad to hear.

Could it be that Emerson has solved this by now ? Maybe your Emerson was an older model ?

Dunno. I've read more than a fair share on these forums regarding Emerson's linerlocks failing just as he's mentioned.

That's too bad, cause I kind of like Emerson knives.

I emailed Ernie Emerson once asking him what was going on about their liner lock failing, and he got pissed off at me bad !! Didn't appreciate this to tell you the truth. However, having seen him on You Tube, he does look like a nice guy. Maybe he took it way too personal. I was only asking a question after all...

I have three Emerson knives and granted, the they lock rather early on the tang, but they're very solid. I don't know what those guys do to have the knives fail on them...:) But still, I know that it sadly seem to happen.

I have a BM AFCK that I EDC'd as a Mechanic, and doin' new home construction, put through hard use for a good 10 years the liner slips a little but hasn't failed, YET.

The blade is retired to lite duty now, I probably should send it to BM for repair, any one know how their service department is?

That's unfortunate.

My personal experience with emerson liners is that they are great and EKI's customer service is awesome. It sucks to hear a person dissuaded from emerson knives because I think that they are the best at the <200 dollar price point by quite a large margin if you consider whole product lineups.

Chip did you ask him about your particular knife or was it more general?

That's something else I've read about a few times on these forums...that Emerson CS (or maybe it's just Ernie) is a pain to deal with.

They're good to deal with, but I'd email or call them before sending it in to see what they can do since that knife is discontinued.

That was more general redisburning. How many Emerson knives do you own ? I've 3 0f them and so far I'm very satisfied.
What does EKI stand for ? Emerson Knives and ?

Is there any alternative to Emerson in the high end tactical folders ?

Hmm, I think it would be obvious why he would be peeved if that's the case.

Right now I unfortunately dont own an Emerson. In the past I have owned 3 of them (a mini commander and 2 different cqc-7b models) and like you I am VERY satisfied with what I get from them. I foolishly sold them and will buy another one when funds permit. Probably a christmas cqc-7b.

as for alternatives; strider, al mar (sere 2000 series) & zero tolerance.

Well, I have to agree he has reasons to be peeved. However, I'll say this : overall email communication sucks--we can't see non-verbal which would have told him how nice I'm to deal with.

What brand do you own the most knives from ?
