Have you found that perfect traditional pair?

Interested in your daily combos and why you pair them up? My most used pair is certainly the houndstooth and farmer.

The 55 takes care of most my cutting chores. Its nice to jave a sharp spear as a backup for dirty tasks. I really just dont use the other tools on the alox though. The saw, while great, rarely gets used. If I have sheetrock to cut my electric saw is always close by and way more efficient. Same with the screw drivers and awl. Great tools I just dont use them.

My new edition, the viper has lead to some new thoughts on pairing. I find the bigger stature over the 55 to be more suited to my daily edc work needs. The double edge to that is sometimes I find it a bit long for some finer control work. I can also admit it is not the most sheeple friendly design(I use my knife almost daily in strangers homes). This has made me think something a little smaller with some belly to maximize my utility is in order. I am looking at the esquire right now as a top contender as well as some boys knives.

Anyway I would love to hear everyone elses thoughts on their pairings and to see a few pics :D

This is one of my favorite combinations...

I find the Sheepsfoot and Pen blades take care of 95% of my needs.

The large Mountain Man blade is for larger cutting chores. The MM replaces the one-hander I might otherwise carry for the same purpose.

My "perfect" pair at the moment is a Texas Jack and a modern in my back pocket. The Texas jack takes care of 98% of my tasks, and the modern takes up the few tasks that require one hand opening / longer blade / dirty work. :)

I like to pair my Leatherman skelatool quiet with either a 940 or recently my 710.

I would keep it to traditional knives. ;)

Here's one pair that I'm partial to:

And for the sheer utility of it:

Great thread Jeff as this has been an obsession of mine for the last few weeks/months. I want diversity in blades---handle length is secondary. I have a "Handyman" business in my off season (Winter) and like you I am in my customers homes 90% of the time. I didn't think to much in regards to the "Sheeple" aspect of it though as I felt "Traditional" are rec'd in a much more positive manner.

Some of the pairs I've been experimenting with and I better land on a solution soon as it's driving me a bit crazy :D.

Option one, Clip/Pen Barlow with Sheepfoot/Pen Scout. The Pen blade is redundant so not sure of this combo?

Option two, Clip/Pen Barlow with Spear, Screwdriver/caplifter Radio. Liking this combo the best so far

Option three, Clip/Pen Barlow with 1997 Wenger Soldier. Liking this but still undecided. The other tools I do use in the Soldier so it's a bit more practical. Not 100% necessary due to the fact I carry a small tool pouch for the tools required for the job at hand.

Then to add to my already indecisiveness, I'm trying to figure out methods of carry? Love the leather pocket sheath but sometimes prefer to carry one knife in FRP and the other FLP.

So any help here guys/gals would greatly be appreciated :o

Some great combos so far

Thanks Paul, been plaguing my mind for awhile now as well. In regards to the sheeple comment, I overall agree with your sentiment and feel traditionals are more friendly in nature. The viper however is a bit big and more aggresive looking.

I love your combos and the charlow jack knife is a great anchor. Might I suggest the GEC electrician with sheepsfoot? Seems like it would remove redundancy for you and keep you in familiar territory :)

I'm like a lot of you guys. A nice old school pattern (Stockman/Trapper, etc) paired with a Pioneer/Farmer handles most tasks.

Typical set up:

Good suggestion Jeff, I've eyeballed the electrician more than once. Now if my wife would buy into my excuse of "Jeff said I should get this" I'm all set :p

I laughed so hard at this. Kind of a twisted sickness of a laugh. The kind where you see two mentally ill patients sitting in a psych ward...

I feel your pain, Paul!

It Used to drive me a LITTLE crazy too ;)

Just trying to answer this question makes me go a little crazy.

My solution was to stop thinking of this and just carry whatever I felt like that day :)

Time to go take my medicine :-p

For EDC I don't see any increased utility in carrying a second slipjoint, though I'll do it sometimes just because I want to. I'd rather carry an one-hander, fixed blade, or multi-tool.

If it doesnt work just do as I have learned. My wife and I work with sort of a knife points program. She always wants stuff so before I just say "whatever you want sweetheart" I preface it with....hmm ya know, thats pretty close to that knife I have been wanting ;) ........ been working pretty good for me. She either says well we dont have the money for both or fine, go ahead and get it. Win win in my book :)

Anyways I have been eyeballing the esquire now, its grown on me. Going to carry this combo a few days and see how I like it.

The Soldier has been in the pocket for over 4 years now, paired with different buddies. It's a great edc on it's own. After getting the Bullnose, it's a really great pair for me. Loving the green micarta, and the O1 is great (my first O1 blade). I also have a 58mm Vic Rambler on the keychain. Great little multi-use knife.
