A thought popped in my head today, I haven't yet had someone come up to me and coment on a knife I was carrying. I have had people ask if they could borrow it, or if I could cut something for them, but there has yet to be someone in a public place who says something along the lines of;
"Hey, is that CRK a 21 or 25?", "How do you like that DPx Heat?", "Is that Sodbuster O1 or 1095?"

I know it isn't that likely that I would run into another person as familiar with knives as many of us are, but I have yet to have Anyone with some knife knowledge comment.

Have any of you folks had anyone say anything? If so and if one insued, what became of the conversation?

Thanks

I've actually commented on knives I've seen in public and had it somewhat backfire.

"Hey, nice Benchmade, I love the Pardue designs!"

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"Your knife... I collect, I was just complimenting your choice of knife."

Then the dirty look, before turning and walking away, shaking his head.

Now I only comment if I recognize something high-end and it's convenient. I won't run across a street to say something, usually. [emoji14]

Unlikely, we are such a minority out there. if it did, my first question would be what was their BF screen name.

I have had cashiers in some places comment " I like your knife". It is mostly chicks lol. The knife the comment on is my crkt spew in a horizontal carry at my belt buckle.

My Dragonfly is 'cute.'

My sister's Squeak is also, 'cute.' The Tasman, however, gets people gasping and 'oohing,' lol.

I got the yellow version to be a little more people-friendly, lol.

That's the extent for the most part. A friend of my brother was showing me his new Gerber Paraframe, so I showed him my small collection. He was most excited about my 531, which really surprised me. Said something about how mine were cool, but his was really cool. I thought it was interesting. He wasn't too impressed with the 940 or PM2, lol.

yea, usually just " HOLY CRAP IS THAT LEGAL?!??!? " but in Texas 5.5 inch IS legal and I tend to carry cold steel 5.5 inch folders...typically a Large Espada, Talwar XL serrated, or Voyager XL Vaquero serrated.....and I'm not shy about pulling em out.

Mine are usually, "what are you so afraid of?" Or "who are planing to kill?"

With some I just respond "not afraid of a damn thing", then raise shirt to expose my .45. My knife is just very sharp and nice looking tool.

For me, it's just my girlfriend saying, "put that thing away!" ..as the waitress walks up. ..I still leave it folded up on the table the entire time I eat. good times

Because I always wear two folders in belt sheaths, (one on each side), the comments I get are usually something like, "why do you carry so many knives?", (without seeing the actual "pocket" knives I always carry too, or the occasional boot knife). I just say I collect pocket knives and have always carried them, so that is usually the end of it. Occasionally I'll get such a comment from someone who is genuinely interested in the subject, but usually they just wonder why so many.

Comments on my beard? yes. Comments on my hat(s)? yes. Comments on my knives? never.

I live in a large Canadian city. Here, not even the police are very knowledgeable about knives, so even when I'm openly carrying my Buck on my belt (the brown leather sheath clashes with almost all of my clothing), I never get any comments. Nobody knows what that shiny clip on my pocket means. I sometimes see other people (maybe 0.01% of folks) with knives in their pockets.

The industry I work in has a lot of my coworkers carrying knives, though I've never met one who knows anything about knives beyond their use as a weapon (which is obviously their reason for carrying despite that being illegal).

As a matter of fact, the only time someone noticed I was even carrying a knife was when my boss asked me what the pouch on my belt was. When I told him it was my SAK, he said "woah there, don't go all MacGuyver on us".

Sometimes the city I live in really irritates me.

I was at Best Buy a few years ago with a computer problem, and he just needed a basic screwdriver for something, and, just like any other shop, no one had put the tools back after use.

I handed him my Alox SAK Recruit. After he handed it back, he said, "Now that's got class."

I see a lot of guys around here with either Buck folders on their hips, or a big name brand folder in their pocket, and I doubt I'm the first guy to hand him a knife. I think the subtle style of the little SAK surprised him.

I have a bunch of redneck buddies. Camaro driving, Busch light and Jim Beam drinking, 4 wheelering deer jerky eating snowmobiling Copenhagen chewing rednecks and I love them. So whenever we get together all the knives and CCW pistols come out for show and tell, the last time in the midst of a bunch of glocks, benchmades and spydercos my opinel #8 and custom hardedge from here on the forum and my buddies lil .22 from NAA were the talk of the night. Quite fun my 8 dollar opie got more run than $200 folders, and a lot of guys learned you can buy custom knives.

I've had people ask if anyone has a knife, pretty funny if they are new to a group as most of my friends carry at least a little SAK or swiss-card, or something, but its funnier for them to see what steel I've got.

I don't recall a complete stranger mentioning a knife. My maxped bag, yes, some think its a camera bag. the only knife mentions were when I was at work, and when you do AV the only guy who doesn't have a multi on him is the head tech who flew in with the client, and didn't check a bag. So sometimes its a bit of a comparison circle, what you have, what you've modded. Now working in the outdoors, its a bit different, not everyone carries, so mine get more questions, people wanting to know where to get similar stuff.

Whenever I've tried talking knives I generally failhard or reconsider as my mouth starts to open.

We can all pick out the security worker who isn't going to have a friendly response if asked about the Contego peeping out of a leg pocket.

I very rarely use my knives in public, so there's not many opportunities for strangers to comment on them. The times I have received comments however are rarely favorable. The most common comments are actually backhanded compliments about the small blade size used as a transition for someone to pull out their gigantic, often illegal, knife that they then wave around drawing a lot of negative attention as they loudy talk about how they would use their prized gas station folder on anyone foolish enough to try and take advantage of them.

That said, I once had a really nice conversation with a mechanic that was putting new tires on my vehicle. As I was there he pulled out a Kershaw he bought off the truck years before to cut up a cardboard box before tossing it in the trash. The knife was so dull that halfway though I just couldn't watch any longer and pulled out my PM2 and finished up the pile of boxes myself. When I came back to pickup my truck the next day I brought my sharpmaker and gave his Kershaw a nice edge as well as giving him an Endura that had been floating around my sock drawer for the last few years. The next time I came by he had a Spyderco Military he asked me to touch up the edge on.

I had one old lady, tell me how lethal a small folding Gerber was once, when I sliced open a bag of ice for her. I felt like whipping out my other bigger locking folder, waving it around while saying nope this one is the lethal one!

Vancouver by any chance ?
I lived there for 8 years and just felt that it is NOT acceptable to carry a knife. Lots of looks when I used to belt carry a small fixed blade or while using a folder but I never let it bother me.

I'm a self employed plumber and with that comes the idea that work or a potential work opportunity can pop up at anytime so when arriving to a job or even scouting one out while having AND using a knife are just essential to me.

People are always going to be uneasy, shocked or generally afraid of others that carry an sharp edged object. Funny how throughout history it was a common site for others to carry a knife and only in last so many years that it's been deemed "not normal". Ha. Oh well. Makes my life easier, feels rewarding and helps put money in my bank account so I looks like I will continue to carry one.

I once had a stranger commenting on my $500 knife (chaves 228 to be exact), but he was actually referring to just the skull pocket clip and not the whole knife itself.

Vancouver is definitely not a knife-friendly city, going to busy streets or supermarket, etc. or any other crowded area, I suggest you leave your knife in your car, toolbox, or whatever. Once you go further out tho, like interiors up north, it's a lot more common to see people carry knives.

Yeah. I saw a guy using a SOG trident at a cigar lounge and started talking.
Come to find out, he likes Microtechs and ZT.
Knew alot about knives and guns so I talked to him for a while.
