I got out my bg-42 cf my sv-90 cf my d2 fg g-10 and my digi camo g-10 millies and i noticed that the carbon fiber millies are so much smoother opening than my g-10 millies. Is there a reason for this if so any suggestions to smooth up the g-10s? thanks

No offense, but is it at all possible that this difference in smoothness is imagined? I have a half dozen Millies, half CF and half G-10, and they all seem to be about the same to me. The use of different materials for handle slabs shouldn't be an issue as far as I can tell. One's G-10 and one is CF, but the slabs are attached to the knife in exactly the same way and seem to be finished similarly on the inside that contacts the blade at the pivot, so I don't know......

I could be wrong, but I just can't find any reason to believe that smoothness of opening depends on handle slab material for this particular model. Pivot tightness maybe?

no offense taken but my cf millies are definitely smoother and easier to open than the g-10 millies.the pivot screws may be the problem i dont know it is a minor thing i just wanted to see if any one else noticed this .these are nib thx for any info.

Well, depending on how old the various models are, there is a differnece in construction. Some would have single metal liners and others two metal liners.

The smoothest opening Military models I've had were some frome the first couple of generations (440V, ATS-34 and such).

Well......for the price difference it better be smoother than the G-10 versions :D

On a serious note, it's probably just the pivot tightness. I've always found that taking apart and cleaning my knives, when they don't have that silky smooth opening, tends to fix the problem. I would recommend adjusting the pivot tightness first before even considering anything else.

My D2 G-10 Millie is MUCH stiffer in action than my BG-42 one.

Part of this is due to a stiffer liner lock, but not completely.

They came that way, and I disassembled, cleaned, lubed and reassembled both of them.

Result: Exactly the same action as before. On both. D2 still a PITA to open and close repeatedly, the BG-42 smooth and silky action.

Next to no bladeblay on both, though.

actually the g-10's have been handled more than the cf's i rarely handle the bg-42 due to availability and it is just so easy to open.i guess i'm just asking are the g-10 harder to break in than the cf models in ya'lls opinion or experience with them. i don't believe there is anything wrong physically with them,i love my millies and collect them but rarely use one in edc so i dont know how they break in. guess i better get a user try it out.thx for all of the input guys.

I have a standard G10 S30V, a CF BG-42 and a CF S90V (D2 on the way still). I find the action is similar enough in all three that I don't think about any difference. I will say that my BG-42 is the smoothest of all three if I had to make a proclamation. My standard feels really nice to open and close though. All three have no play and super solid lockup - something the Millie is certainly known for.

i have 2 bg42's and a d2/fg that are equally buttery smooth.

my s90v is the roughest to open (relatively), and the detente is the strongest of the four.

I find that the detente is strongest on my digital camo millie, and that my lock bar on the sv-90 doesnt engage quite as good unless you really open it hard.is there anyway to adjust the detente.

The detent probably just needs to break in but you may be able to adjust the lockbar from the extra early lockup problem by loosening all the screws, pivot and scales both, opening the knife to a good lockup, then tightening everything down. Just make sure the blade remains centered when it's tightend down.

That could be enough to get a good yet early lockup which is ideal for a new liner lock knife.

The concept is sort of like completely assembling something with holes that require lining up before you tighten everything down.

I have noticed the same thing. I have three of the S90V Military models and I just got a standard S30V model. All of the S90V knives feel exactly the same which is to say pretty smooth. They are not nearly as smooth as the Para-military I just got but they are much smoother the the S30V Military. I have carried one of my S90Vs for 6 months or so until recently but it still feels the same as the ones new in the box.

The one I just bought was brand new from a local store but according to the date code it was made in May 2006. It only has a liner on one side and has G-10 handle. All of my Military models lock up super tight with absolutely no blade play.

I think I know why they feel different. If I open the knives up and hold the handles on edge in front of a strong light I can see that between the carbon fiber and the blade is a washer which sits between the blade and the steel liner that is on both sides of the knife with the S90V models. When I do this with the S30V model I really cant see any light between the blade and the handle. I don't know if there are any washers in there at all. To my ear it sounds like the blade slides against the G-10 itself. This makes it less smooth and more stiff. I don't know maybe the G-10 will smooth out and the blade will move more freely. I only bought it two days ago.

I really like my S30V. I don't feel so bad about carrying it at work. I broke the tip on my S90V model the other day.:grumpy: I know the new ones have dual liners and I guess they have washers as well but I have heard people with the older ones like mine say they hold up just as well as the new models. It doesn't bother me that it is stiffer I kinda like it. I don't have to worry about the blade opening in my pocket.

is my BG-42 Military, came silky smooth out of the box, alot smoother than my D2 Millie and the prior S30V I had.

Also I see a trend that most people who have the BG-42 Millie think it is the smoothest, I think the factory polished this knife better around the pivot point.
