have you used the Buck Custom Knife shoppe?

what's the story with BG-42 over the ATS? Much stronger steel? I see alot of people choose that blade. (still a newbie at this)

Thanks for your input. The Asian Waterbuffalo does look real nice! But I'm sort of drawn to the mirror polished blades. (how do they hold up with use?)

Maybe its just me, but both of my ATS34 Buck knives(277,291) came out of the box sharper the the 110's I just got in BG-42. Mine wouldn't shave and both the ATS34's would straight out of the box. I also found them easier to sharpen. Obviously I haven't had the 110 long enough to say which holds a better edge. Wouldn't suprise me if the BG-42 holds a better edge, as it seems to be harder.
I think you would happy with either. I think a lot of people go with the BG-42 because it is unavailable in a production Buck. At least that was my reasoning for choosing it over ATS34. I knew I liked ATS34, my 277 would be my favorite EDC if it only had a clip. But I wanted something different.
The next one I get will either be damascus, or if not available polished 420 because it will be just a looker anyway.

FWIW - My BG-42 blades for my 110's out of the custom shoppe have been theeee sharpest blades I've ever had NIB. They will all pass the hanging hair test with ease. Not that my ATS-34 blades aren't sharp. Just not quite as sharp with the factory edge.

Damn, I wonder why mine didn't come like that.

BG-42 is essentially ATS-34 with some vanadium in it. Which means it holds an edge better, at least in theory.

Nice! Do you have pics? I need to build up my collection. I've been keeping on eye on Ebay for something special.

Sure, here you go.

The top one is the Elk with 420 brushed finished blade.
The bottom is the Stag with 420 mirror polish blade.

Dang this is reminding me I never ordered that Asian Buff' horn one!

TLC: You lucked out with the stag scales ( especially the deer stag ) that Buck ( PCKS ) made for you. I like dark stag with some character (nice, deep grooves ). You are a lucky man, indeed. The only thing I like about my stag handles is that they are hand-filling. Take care, rob

I think it's Sambar Stag, I like it a lot, but I actually prefer the Elk one to the Stag. I hope to get one in Asian Buff' and then "maybe" someday get another Elk with BG42 steel for carrying.

Mine just arrived 20 minutes ago. BG-42, oak handles, nickel bolsters with ny initials on it. It`s a beautiful piece of work, and I can`t believe I waited this long to order one! I`ll certainly order another, especially since it only took 3 weeks to get it. I own a lot of more expensive custom knives, but none with a cool factor like this one. :)

Such a great toy butI couldn't decide what to order. So I did what anyone with some free cash would do...I ordered two:

1) ATS-34, Smooth Asian Waterbuffalo with nickel bolsters and rivets

2) BG-42, Indigo Royalwood, with finger grooves, nickel bolsters and rivets

I wished the shoppe would offer the S30V, after a week of carrying the Alaskan Hunter the brass is already starting to tarnish…it gives it character but would’ve been better in nickel (IMHO).

Collection now growing to (4) 110's + (1) 112. Thinking of picking up the Squire to use at the office, especially if we go back to business formal.:barf:

Well I am using one now! After breaking the blade on my normal EDC, I had to send it in for repair, so I thought what the heck I am carrying the Elk handled CS 110.

This is gonna be my setup:

Nickel Blosters, Rivets, Fiji Orangewood, BG-42, plain edge and black sheath. Gonna order it soon. :)

Should be slick!

You can say that again, man! This is pretty much my "final draft" about my custom 110.. I've got stunted by how it look everytime when I am viewing it on the order form, even if it's just a computer image.. wait till I've got the real one... man... can't wait! :D

And the online images don't do them justice, wait until you get it!

As cool as my Elk scales looked onscreen they were the bomb when I opened the package!

Someday I will order BG42 plain edge, smooth Asian water buffalo, nickel bolsters, no rivets, black leather sheath.

Then again, my stock 110 has held up nicely after 8 years. It will be a long time before I need another 110. ;)

"It will be a long time before I need another 110."

That sounds much too rational for a knife lover! You know the old saying, "Too much is never enough!" :p

Hehee exactly, that's what holding me from order my custom too. Surely makes me feel qulity about it. :D

Just got my order from the Shoppe. Both knives are a works of art. I can't wait to start carrying the Asian Waterbuffalo model this weekend. I think I'll put the Royalwood away for my son to claim down the line (only 17.5 years till he graduates high school).
