Basically my wife wants to get a gift for me, because we are having our fist child. I am looking for some tips on quality knives. Something like Chris reeves or any other design. I just don't know what knife to get with a budget of around $400.00. Any ideas would be great.

Are you going to use this knife or will it be a collector piece? If you are going to use it what will it be used for?If it is a collector knife, what do you like? folders? fixed blades? tactical? traditional?

Congratulations on your wife's pregnancy!
I hear lots of great things about the custom knife makers here on the forum.
Personally, I would look into that or a Chris Reeve knife.

Best wishes.

I know a few guys that have Sebenzas and Umnumzaan's that were gifted with the same "born on" date as their kids. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Custom, all the way! You can get a knife that is uniquely yours!

I would go custom slip joint, but that is just me!

Hehehe sounds like you will need some "Get out of diaper duty free" coupons. Those will serve you better than any knife ever could.

Your life will never be the same. You have no time for knives. Get a minivan and that downtrodden/defeated look and go! :)

Three great options: custom slip joint (but you'll have to find one for sale, not commission it, as the waits are too long), CRK (incredible quality/tolerances), or William Henry (many interesting options).

Congrats and good luck!

Congrats on having your first child.

In the $400 price range you have a good deal of great knives to choose from.

Def look at a CRK Sebenza, Large or Small depends on your preference.

Also some makers to take a look at.....

Grayman
Les Voorhies
Lionsteel
Warren Thomas
Microtech

Those are just a few you can look at to get an idea of something you may like.

Before you think about a knife, you better get a gift to her lined up. Do you have that one covered?

This man is smart. You better get her a gift as well.....more then the $400 knife she gets you. I guess my wife missed the boat on gifts. She was the one that went through the rough pregnancy and delivery so I just got her a gift. I do get spoiled on Father's Day though.

As for a $400 knife. Get a Sebenza 25. It's all the rave right now.

Congrats on the baby on the way BTW. Your life is about to become even more meaningful. You can't explain fatherhood until you are a father. Congrats!

Congrats on the baby!

I'm a dad and love every minute of it, even the aggravating ones.

I suggest you get a ZT, Spyderco or Kershaw and save the rest for diapers. IMO, customs are not worth it if want to use the knife. If you want something to hang on the wall to look at maybe, but I don't think you are going to get significantly more performance from a custom than a quality production knife.

Congratulations! For the baby, and for forking over $400 on one knife. Chris reeve makes outstanding knives. Get the umnumzan

Well seeing how good in home child care runs about 20 an hour, and your budget is 400 which equals 20 hours I'd say some coupons so when that first stomach virus rolls around (roto-virus) umm, yummie, or the baby develops colic, or doesn't adjust to days or nights real quick, or..... You get the picture I'd take 20 hours of get out of daddy duty free cards. I'd rather a good nights sleep over a 400 knife any day of the week. Trust me on this, sleep, go for the sleep, it really is much more valuable. Oh and congrats on the baby.

The idea that a CRK (Sebenza or otherwise) is worth $300 or more is groupthink at its worst. High quality, yet still highly overrated knives.

If you want a high quality folder at a much more reasonable price, the Benchmade Griptilian or 710 are easily had on eBay in the $90-130 range. I'm sure there are more than a few Spydercos which are an equally good value as well.

Save the rest of that knife budget for the kid - you're gonna need it! Congrats btw!

Don't lie to the poor guy--you will never really sleep well again. Welcome to fatherhood!
