Having first child. Wife wants to get a gift for me?

If you call up the Chris Reeve shop directly, you might be able to set up an order for a knife to be made on your child's birthday. Looking back, that would have been something I would have liked.

Of course, having your child might be considered enough of a gift itself. Congratulations Dad.

Huge Congratulations! I would probably choose an mnandi for a gift like that. Saw one with my sons birthday(2-29-12) on the exchange a while back and I wish snagged it.
Really though, you should stop hanging around here so late and CHERISH the last full nights of sleep you'll have for a good while.

Maybe you should get a good Benchmade or Spyderco then with the savings get a maid a couple times after the kid arrives.

BTW, congratulations!!! Being a Dad is great. You will love everyday...but not every night.

I have a 2year old and a 9month old. My advice is to skip the knives and just ask if you could sleep as much as possible until the baby is born. rarely do i get to sleep more than 6hrs.

What we really enjoy is chopping. I cut the 2yo a knife size "chop stick" so he can chop at limbs while i use: 1st i was using a plain jane ontario machette, then i ponied up and got a brkt golok. We have a fire pit and go camping we process a good number of limbs. He really likes chopping as do I.
I like the small size of the golok, but it has pretty good heft also.

Just updating. We had a baby girl a month ago today. I have learned that sleep is more valuable than i thought and I purchased the benchmade 551 grip. Awesome knife, I just couldn't drop $400 on a knife. I think I made a good call.

You made a great decision. Shiny things don't mean as much any more when you start having kids.

Congratulations!

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter!
That 551 is an exceptional knife and I am sure you will enjoy it.
Now post pics!!!

The 551 is a good knife; I'd feel the same about spending $400 on a new knife with a new baby to care for.

The important question is, what knife did you buy for your daughter?

Congrats and I think you made a good call as well. A Grip is an excellent knife that won't disappoint.

Congratulations!!

As for the knife, something like this calls for a traditional that is engraved or personalized in some way for this occasion if you must go for a knife. Something to treasure and not use as there is no replacing it if it is lost/stolen/damaged.

If I were looking for something in that price range, I'd seriously check out a Laconico.

Congrats on the pregnancy.

Congratulations. I got much less sleep with the first child than the second or third. Enjoy your knife and welcome to being a dad.

Six kids later...and many yrs...get a Sebenza. Large or small depends (primarily) on your hand size, although the small is "friendlier" if it is to be used in an office environment. I've had a bunch of each; they are great...the greatest....IMO.
And congrats on "daddy-ship" and on picking a wonderful woman who thinks of you also.
