I unfortunately know that this happens to more than just me. You have a tight month, bills get behind, and money gets scarce. All of the sudden, the knife drawer becomes a place to look for some cash. I have a (now) very small collection. I have had to sell off quite a few knives the last 6 months or so, but I have acquired a few as well. Now my issue is, the few I have left are all knives that I personally value far more than their financial worth. Some are sentimental, some are rare or collectible, a couple were gifts. So how do you decide which ones go on the block?
For myself, I have only one knife that I know for sure I would NEVER get rid of, my KaBar. It was my issued knife in the Marines, and i managed to keep it for a decade in service and for another decade since I got out.
I guess I am having trouble choosing. I know I need a knife to carry. Here lately that role has been filled by a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 (great knife for the $80 it cost me). I guess the other fixed blades could go, since I never get outdoors to use them anymore. The collectible folder might take a while to sell, as most people don't go blow $800 on a custom Wayfarer all willy nilly. Most of the production stuff could most likely be replaced fairly easily down the road.
I guess it just goes to prove that knives are a pretty good investment. Sure you might lose a couple bucks on them, but that's still not too bad. Anyway, thoughts? Opinions?

YOU are looking for a Hand-Out or you would have simply listed the knives for sale without the CRYING, and to throw in you are a Marine is a Disgrace to the Corp.!!!!!!

I am looking for no such thing there Bud. I was speaking about a subject that I am sure many of us have had to deal with. Go troll someone else.
I mean, did you even read the ad? I am clearly just trying to discuss the decision making process for this type of a situation.

Harsh. Perhaps the op, like many of us, has an emotional connection to his knives and is looking for some kind words in a difficult time.

What the heck, man?
I didn't infer any of that from the guy's post.
Go take a nap or something.

That was kinda harsh.

I would hate to be in your position, but you are doing the right thing. The obvious answer is to prioritize those that mean the most to you. Then sell the production knives at the bottom of the list. Those will be the easiest to replace. I met a guy in a similar situation, and he was trying to sell a high end custom, but it was taking way too long. Not everyone has a $1000 to spend on a knife.

Yeah. I respect someone who sells knives to pay bills rather than running up the credit cards.

WOW.. This went to hell in a handbag real quick!!

Ya gotta do what works best for you as we are not in your seat.. It sucks but so does being hungry, cold, homeless!! John

I knew what you meant immediately because I've been there....

I can only offer this advice. Anything that has sentimental value should never be sold, you will only regret it.
But on the other hand , the expensive custom that has no sentimental value and will fetch the most will be easier to part with.

I had to liquidate a few last year , and the few expensive knives I sold aren't even missed.

the guy ASK for "Opinions and Thoughts" that's what I gave him.....he calls me Names because of a Typo? come on Members!

Good luck, man. I've been there and I totally understand your situation. Don't get rid of that KaBar.

BTW, bikderdave, I think calling the man a disgrace to the Corps is way over the line. WTH is wrong with you?

THIS is the kind of advice I was seeking, thank you.

I've been in that situation more than once. It's always tough but sometimes you have no choice. You usually end up getting a fraction of what it's worth.
It sucks.

No pal, he called you a name because you're acting like a prick....not because of your typo.

Good topic!

And wow, I did not read a single word in that original post that asked for a handout.

Sounds like the guy has a small collection of knives that he finds are near and dear to him and it has come time for a few to be sold to pay for other responsibilities. I understand this, since I usually too keep a small collection (<6 or so) and if you have been refining your tastes and finally find the small handful that you really do love, then this choice is hard.

In response to the OP, I would ID the 1 or 2 you absolutely want, perhaps for different purposes (a fixed blade and a folder) and then sell the rest, as hard as that may be. OR, start selling the kitchen appliances and keep all the knives. That works too
