Is it just me or did all the army navy, hunting, outdoor sporting goods, gun shops, knife shops, disappear? I sometimes want to feel a knife before i make a purchase, i find myself buying every kershaw i see just because i see them! Not only that but, you go to the magazine section of a store and sometimes they dont have magazines featuring guns or knives. Also wasn't the knife the first tool ever? I mean COME ON! @#$$%* :grumpy::barf:

i know knife shows are the best place, but where i live thats like 2 hour drive and only once every 3-4 months

I just checked the phone book and they all still appear to be there. You got me worried for a second though.

The closest knife shop to me that carries more than one of each brand is 2 hours away. That said, I've bought all my knives online without ever holding, using, opening any of them

I don't see it as a problem, unless you have to buy it in person

It's still fun to play with them first. Years ago, I'd walk around New York City and stop off at shops with a knife section. Hard to resist, so I'd buy something.

Now I just go to our NJKCA meetings for my toys. No stores around here.

I worked at a store that had the best selection of knives in town but they closed almost a year ago.

i consider myself lucky that i have a really good knife store nearby, they carry everything!

The only knife store around here is the Spyderco factory outlet. That's great if you're looking for a Spydie; not so great otherwise.

this is what im talking about. i dont get it

I havn't bought a knife in person in a while.

Most of my knives have been purchased online.

Most of the reviews that convinced me to get the knives were right here on bladeforums....damn this place is expensive lol.

the only knife store in my town is friken big five witch considers winchester knives and smith and wesson knives quality what bologna

there is a store about 45 mins from me but i have to go though all the ninja swards and wolverline claws a to get to some BM and Kershaws and the occasional overprices spyderco. They have some Onterio but its like $250 for an RTAKII. The 2-3 day wait when you order a knife online is painful.

I'm lucky enough to live within 30 minutes of one of the largest knife stores in North America, called The House Of Blades. (Ft. Worth)
They have it all - every brand and model of production knife imaginable, handmade customs, and a great selection of (NIB) "out of production" Spyderco's, Benchmades, and Kerhsaws... Now the The bad news - virtually everything they sell is list price.

Don't buy much there anymore but it is definitely a great place to handle a knife you might be intersted in online. BTW, I don't feel too guilty using the HOB for knife fondling purposes as I figure I paid my dues buying many knives from them at list (or higher) back in the 70's, 80's & 90's. :D

lol yes it would be, they have a lot of nice stuff.

That they do. I need to go rummage through some knives, then go home and buy the ones I liked online.
Much cheaper that way. The only problem is, it's about 75 miles from home. :D

The only knife shop I've dealt with in this city (Ottawa) is kind of a joke...sells knives for well above the MSRP and I'm pretty sure I'd get better customer service from a rabid mongoose. The mongoose might just be more knowledgeable than these folks, at that...

Mentioning no names, of course. :p

I'd much rather buy in person than online, and I'd gladly pay a little more for the experience of buying knives from a local shop instead of a cold, uncaring paypal account, I'm not going to pay more money for worse service. :thumbdn:

I'm pretty sure there used to be more outdoor/knife shops around here...

The only knife that I ever bought in person is my old Victorinox Soldier. All others were bought online.

At outdoor stores and army dump stores you can find knives here and I know there is a knife store in a city at half an hour driving from my home, but the selection of knives is generally not very large. The outdoor stores typically sell Wenger, Opinel and Leatherman and sometimes a few other brands. The army dump stores typically sell Victorinox, Leatherman and some brands you don't find in the outdoor stores.

In the Netherlands I seldomly visit knife stores, but I do in other countries. One of the largest knife stores I've ever seen was in the German city Cochem an der Mosel. Along the Mosel Promenade there's a shop, run by Asian people, which has a lot of knives. And in the Swedish city of Mora you can find several shops where they sell many kinds Mora's, not surprising of course. :)

The local Safeway grocery store didn't have Gun and Knife magazines during the Clinton administration. When Bush got elected the Gun and Knife magazines magically returned to Safeway. Now that Obama's been elected, guess what disappeared again ?

As far as knife stores, we've got We Be Knives, TAD Gear, and REI in town so there's some opportunity to handle some better knives than Big5 carries.
