Almost here. Can't wait to hit the timber. Been too long of a summer.

Scott,

I'm new to the area and now living in Lancaster. Can you provide details about the hike? I've heard from workmates that you can access the mountain from the AT as well? What are your plans?

Brian

Brians, you'll be confused with things like the up side down river !! Though I haven't hiked there it's one of the best areas in the world for hawk migration. They count each bird and one day I was there they counted 1200 of one type of hawk . Absolutely awesome !

I've been there a couple of times as a kid. Great place and I'm sure its awesome for camping. Have fun!

The Hawk Mountain trip that Scott is going to is a minimalist trip.

This was taken from the anothe forum where the trip originated.

"This is a bare bones trip, that SR you keep behind the seat of your rig, let's use it.
You're out hunting and become lost, your vehicle dies on a backroad and what you thought was one ridge and done became two and it's dark, dayhike becomes weekend stay.
No nylon Hiltons,i.e. tents, 2 canteens 1 is empty and the other is half gone, time to purify, food MRE, ramen, powerbars, you maybe a little hungry. We are meeting at 6 PM on Fri. the 26th., hike in, and commence to shelter consrtuction and firewood gathering, darkness is approaching, none ever planned a day ahead to weather the storm. "

That sounds awesome, I"m sorry I have to Miss it but I'm gonna be ass deep in the Delaware doing some water rescue training all weekend. Hope you guys have a good time.

Brian, if you are in Lancaster, Pa. you are real close to my shop. Check out the Campout/Shop Tour thread over on my forum. You are welcome to come by.
The Hawk Mtn. trip is off the AT. We hike in right on the trail about a mile, then move off the trail about 100 yds. and set up camp. I catch a ride with a buddy so I can't give you directions. I know the trail head is on Hawk Mtn. rd.

Have a great time up there. I have been going to Hawk since 1968, as one of the staff of the Civil Air Patrol Hawk Mountain Ranger School, which is located on Pine Swamp Road. From where you guys are going to be camping, don't neglect to go South on the AT and see the Pinnacle and Pulpit Rock, 2 of PA's primo overlooks on the AT. Lots of interesting history on the Bird Sanctuary grounds also, in addition to the fantastic spectacle of the migration.

Have fun.

Have a most excellant trip scott. I look forward to pics, and how you liked the gear setup.

Outta here in a half an hour. Should be an interesting trip with the weather. I've got a new saw to try out. It's a Dandy saw. Dandy is the brand name. This saw is fixed. I don't have much confidence with folding saws. Anyway, be back Sunday nite.
