I am new to the Hawks - & I had a a question - I have seen some HAWK heads with a hole on each side that a set screw goes into the handle to keep the head from moving. I have also seen HAWKs just forced /hammered tight on the handle. WHat keeps the head of the hawk from moving & are set screw needed?

A set screw is not usually needed if the haft (handle) is shaped properly. Centrifugal force will set the head nicely. Set screws are just a bit of added security. The only company I know of that has a set screw is Cold Steel. Most hawks you will find will not have the set screw. The few Cold Steel hawks that I have I don't used the set screw. YMMV.

It has been said that set screws may cause a handle to break...especially when a hawk is thrown. For this reason many work very hard to obtain a good haft-to-eye fit.

All good replies...

My general rule-of-thumb is to not use a set screw unless I am using a hawk strictly as a hatchet...
