'hawk question?

on 'hawks like these, what is the purpose of the notch on the underside of the blade close to the haft and what is it called?

I believe it's used to either hold the hawk to the belt or to retrieve traps used in the fur trade.Just my guess though.

not mine, that one sold recently in the makes' forum for a very reasonable price. i'm a cheap bastard and might have bought it if i'd seen it sooner.

yeah.. it's very nice, but too pretty to throw.
