Hawk Ram Flipper

Thanks for posting the additional info Tif.

You and Thomas are quite a team at whipping us up into a frenzy for the new stuff.
Y'all had me with the first pics of the new knives on the other thread!

Clever how Thomas managed to work in (and remind me of) another knife I still need to buy. Nice choice, using the ZDP Mini-Cyclone, I like the opposing blade and handle colors.

WOW! Thomas I am really impressed, with you and all the new blades. Go head with your bad self:)

I worry about the wheel rubbing a hole in my jeans. Anyone
thought of testing that aspect? As most knife clips have
a smooth backside to protect against that I would think
the wheels would end up leaving marks or maybe even
ripping a hole. I dunno?

Just askin.

Worried about skid marks in your jeans?

Any info on the Hawk Lock???

Not to pre-empt the more knowledgeable but I believe it's a form of "tang lock" type mechanism (i.e. - BM Axis lock, Spyderco Ball lock, SOG Arc lock, Cold Steel Ultra lock, the defunct REKAT Rolling lock). I believe it's a step up from the previous lock design the Hawk's--the D.O.G. or Deadbolt Over Grabstep and made into a production folder by another company--in that it is SEALED from dust, gunk, mud, etc.

Hope that helps. If there are any clarifications the official people, I will stand corrected

Yeah, thats what I assumed it looked like. If its sealed, thats even better!

I posted this in the main Blade Discussion Forum -

New Kershaw Folders

Picked up these Kershaw flyers at the Blade Show - and got permission to reproduce them -

Please see - New Kershaw Folders -
other brochures were for the Shallot, Tyrade and Tanto Groove.

the knife that interested me the most was the R.A.M. - description from the brochure -
RAMdesc.jpg

The R.A.M. locks open and closed by the new Hawk-Lock mechanism - which is very clever
- to open with the flipper, one has to overcome the lock's initial resistance - that actually pre-loads tension in the finger and the blade then snaps open with some authority
- it kind of overcomes the problem with smaller blades for the Tim Galyean designed flipper as in the JunkYard Dog (link to review and discussion).

There are also those 3 "rods" on the R.A.M. that act like thumb studs. I don't think the blade flipped out when I used them.

I must say that I like what I see coming out of Kershaw these days. Some really innovative and cool designs and nice quality for the price. Can't wait to handle a RAM at my local dealer

Just on the outside. The inside is ok. ;)

Personally, I think that's the idea behind the wheels - no solid surface material dragging against clothing creating a wear pattern. I've had many pairs of jeans that I've retired because of wear holes in the back pocket due to innumerable knives I've carried there (never all at the same time). I know they were originally designed as "belt clips", but come on. I've never seen anyone carry a clip knife from their belt. I use to carry my pocket knives in my back pocket before there was EVER a clip on a folder. I had a Normark Super Swede (big, plastic handled, sandvik blade, no edge holding p.o.s., but I liked it) that I carried that way for years.

The R.A.M. looks awesome, and I really prefer the addition of the finger choil on the Kershaw version. Looks like a sale to me! :D

Bringing up an old thread because of OE's new R.A.M. thread.

Why was the wheel clip not kept?

Why was the wheel clip not kept?
The wheel clip was a bit complicated and expensive to produce. It also would have delayed the delivery date of the RAM significantly.

The standard clip also gave an additional right hand carry option, making the RAM a "Tri-Carry'. BTW, I haven't hear any compliments on that option.:p

We felt it important the clip didn't bring on a Frost like look or reputation, so both the clip and screws are produced here at the USA factory.

I truthfully didn't like the idea of the wheel clip. It looks neat, must work
or the Hawks wouldn't have put it on there.

 :D
