I forged this from a stone mason's hammer and even though it is an unknown steel I am confident that it is tough just because of the use it was designed for. It did harden up and temper nicely in my Evenheat and has taken a very sharp edge. The curly soft maple handle is for show only, it is nowhere near durable enough to be used as a chopper or to be thrown, so I have included a white ash utility handle with the grain it the proper direction for hard use. So if you are looking for a hawk to carry in re- enactments the maple will work well for you but if you want to throw this hawk or use it as a camp or hunting tool use the ash handle.
Length of the head, including the spike is 7 3/4 inches, the cutting edge is 2 1/2 inches.
The soft maple handle is 17 inches, the ash18 1/2 inches
