Hawkbill Blades are PERFECT Companion Blades

I went ahead and ordered the Tasman. I am going to go ahead and blame you guys.

Paper work with those knives state that they are not suited for utility purposes. The Civilian has a longer hook end than the Matriarch. I would not use the Civilian for utility but I do use the Matriarch. All you have to do is treat it as you would any thin tipped knife.

I have seen the paperwork on the Civilian and that knife does have a pretty thin tip. Does the Matriarch and Lil' Matriarch also come with this same paperwork? I thought that since the Matriarch tip was thicker and it states utility in the product description that it would not come with the paperwork.

The Tasman is a killer companion blade. I had to order my Dad and my Wife a Tasman after they both used mine. They liked it that much!

I have two Civilians. An old one with the rubber inserts and the current model. Also a Superhawk PE and a Lil Matriarch. What can I say, I love spydie hawkbills. I'm ordering a Matriarch 2 at present. Never had one of the original Matriarchs. Anyone here know the difference between the old Matriarch and the Matriarch 2?

thanks for this thread. my companion blade is mini dyad, because its great for being around sheeple, post office legal, and it has serrated edge too

I sometimes carry a merlin. I'm not sure, but from pictures, it looks like an earlier version of the tasman.
I wish they made a serrated hawkbill version of the dragonfly. That would be the perfect size for a companion blade.

If I remember correctly, it is very possible I do not, the same utility work warning that came with the Civilian also came with the Matriarch. It is not really needed as the Matriarch tip is slightly thicker with a shorter hook.

The only real difference is the blade length with the Matriarch 2 being longer, about 1/2", with more hook. Holding them up side by side the cutting edge is almost identical except for the Civilians hook length. Looking at pics of the original Matriarch it had fewer frame screws that were pressed instead of having torx screws.

Thanks for the info! I like that difference.

Hey there is nothing at all wrong with any of the Dyad models ( big or small). When I carried/EDCed one of my C-44 big Dyads it was pretty much my main EDC for quite some time. I'm even contemplating on EDCing it again.

But the main reason I prefer a Spyderco Hawkbill is that added dimension it gives you>> especially the fully serrated Hawkbills because they can more of less do demolition type cutting jobs. Nothing goes through cardboard like a Spyderedged Hawkbill IMO. Not to mention what it can give you with pull cutting.

I can't do without a conventional PE blade either. And my C-60 Ayoob PE with the G-10 handle along with a premium Hawkbill model is a great way to be well equiped when carrying folders for daily cutting jobs.
