Being we are about to say farewell to the year 2009 I thought it was high time we find out just how the Spyderco Hawkbill fervor is doing.

I do know for a fact that there are many more Hawkbill fans and users than there were just 2 years ago. With Spyderco's new H-1 Spyderhawk I've never seen a better time for new users or collectors to dive right in.

I've been using a G-10 Harpy as a companion blade to my main EDC for many months now and I wouldn't have it any other way. I find myself using it at least twice to four times a day. Hawkbills are becoming more and more discovered as valuable user blades and no knife company on the planet makes a better Hawkbill than Spyderco,.

So let's talk Hawkbills for 2010  Also tell us your good experiences with Hawkbill blades. And how many new Hawkbill fan users do we have now that weren't into them a year ago? Martial ARTs folks we would love to hear from you all as well. And for those who use them occupationally we want to hear your story.

Just opened an h1 spyderhawk for Christmas. (My wife has impeccable taste.) Keep em coming!

Ed your wonderful wife is definitely a "KEEPER" for sure ;) Does she have any sisters :D ??? Any girl who loves Hawkbills is a woman of virtue to be sure:thumbup:.

I do know that you're going to love that H-1 Spyderhawk. I have the SE & PE original Spyderhawks with the VG-10 blades.

A lot of people see the Spyderhawk as more of a martial arts gem >> and it darn well could be. But I see it as a very valuable cutting tool for outdoor cutting chores and one hell of a survival blade.

Congratulations on a great Christmas gift. And you be sure to get the little woman a nice Harpy for her next birthday or anniversary :D

I bought a LadyHawk 2 weeks ago and a SuperHawk last week. It is a little big for EDC for me so I am thinking about a Harpy and or the SpyderHawk in H1 steel. How good is that steel and should I get serrated or plain edge? I may have become a convert to the Hawkbill.

here is my new superhawk , great blade !!!

That is the one I just got and it is a very nice knife. Great photo. I wish I could post photos but I am not that tech smart.

Hey RKH if that Superhawk is more than you bargained for I got stuff to trade for it :) H-1 blade steel is good stuff. It is a different animal as far as cutlery steel goes. It's what is known as a "work hardened" steel. The more that you abrade it and work it or burnish it the harder it gets. I carry an H-1 Tasman from time to time and edge holding is not a problem. It is different than VG-10 for instance but not as difficult to sharpen.

We are over at Spyderco.com forum now lobbying for a new G-10 handled Harpy. Come on over and join the fun. If you can find one of the older G-10 handled Harpys they are truly a gem. I carry one with a G-10 handle, ATS-55 blade steel, full Spyderedge and it is a beast of a smaller blade. I say smaller but it is really ideal for all types of cutting chores. Spyderco's Hawkbills are head & Shoulders above everyone else's Hawkbills. So whatever you settle on make sure it's a Spyderco

That Superhawk is truly a Superblade for sure. It's very high on my list to get once my finances normalize. I do highly advise to also check out the H-1 Spyderhawks. That advice goes to RKH as well ;).

That G-10 handle on that Superhawk looks like it would glue itself to your hand. VG-10 is such a good, reliable, all-purpose blade steel I can't imagine that blade being anything but superb. Great blade my brother.

Hawkbills will grow in popularity and usefullness in the year 2010. I also believe that we are going to see an explosion of people checking out Spyderco's H-1 blade steel knives ( especially the Salt Series). And I believe it will be hard to get an H-1 Spyderhawk because I believe that sales are going to surge and dealers will be running out of them a lot.

I bet that Superhawk would be a great blade for someone in the fishing industry. I also believe it would even make a great all-purpose EDC folder. Hawkbills are going to surge in popularity and demand in 2010. Mark my words

Thanks for the info JD SPYDO. I am getting use to the SuperHawk size but I think I will try the Harpy and the Tasman Hawk. Would I be better off with the serrated blade? I see the harpy comes serrated only. Isn't harpy a great name for a knife and I have about 20 Spydercos or more. I think Spydercos are best knives being produced by a company today and I love VG10 steel. I read that the SuperHawk is being discontinued. Thanks for your help.

RKH

Yes , Superhawk discontinued . ( why , I have No idea )
I think this is great blade .
btw it has CF handle textured just like g10 so its hard to see colors of CF.

... and this is another great knife

Thanks for the great picture of the Great Spyderco "CIVILIAN" model. Not many knife fans regard the Civilian or the Matriarch as true Hawkbills. However there are few folks that regard the Dodo as a Hawkbill as well.

Well they are all Hawkbills and most people simply regard those mentioned as specialty blades.

I got a funny feeling we might even see more Hawkbills in H-1 blade steel especially when it appears that the Spyderhawk seems to be doing much better than it's VG-10 predecessor.

I'm surprised we're not hearing more from first responders because Hawkbills are right up their alley. And why aren't fishermen chiming in? Well the Harpy won't die and I don't think any of the other current Hawkbills in the line up will either.

I got a Ladybug Hawkbill in the mail today. I wish it had been made with H1 instead of VG-10, but still... it's so cute! Can't wait to use it on something.

My first in the Ladybug line, though I have a Jester (I like the blade shape better on the Jesters than the normal Ladys...).

I think this is great blade .

The reason knives get discontinued is because they don't sell enough and the reason for that usually isn't that the knife is not good enough, but that people think the price is too high.

I ordered a Harpy w/serrated blade Monday and hoped it would be here today but it looks like Monday now. I am really looking forward to this one. I will get the Tasman Hawk next. Does anyone know if the Tasman in plain edge has a fairly thin edge or is it a little on the thick side? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You'll love the Harpy "RKH" :) And I'm glad you're starting out with a stainless handled model. STainless handled Spyders are great and I own a few of them myself. But after you use that model for a while and you ever get your hands on a G-10 Harpy you won't believe the difference.

I do urge you to get a set of the Spyderco 701 Profiles and learn to use them. With the Profiles you'll be able to keep that Harpy factory sharp.

Use the Harpy as a companion folder along with a conventional folder and you will be equipped to do just about any cutting chore. Great choice! And a great way to start the New Year with a super New Hawkbill

Thanks JD Spydo. I do have a Spyderco Sharpmaker. This is my second Sharpmaker. Bought my first sometime in the early nineties and new one with the two different angle settings a few years ago. Old one went to my son. Nothing tones up an edge like the Sharpmaker. Do I still need the profiles you are talking about. I bought the Sharpmaker to help me keep my serrated Spydercos sharp. If you neglect a serrated edge too long it will shorten the life of it because when you do sharpen it the points are worn nearly off. And yes, I do have a stainless or 2 Spydercos. Love the thinness but yet they are comfortable in use.

im thinking about getting a superhawk. is it worth the money and are their any bad things about the design? i heard the corner on the backside of the liners are sharp. is this true?
thanks

Spyderco do a fine job of catering to us hawkbill fans :)

You just said it. When you use that 204 Sharpmaker a lot on a Spyderedge you eventually round off the spike part of the serrations. Whereas when you use the Spyderco 701 Profiles you can maintain the edges of each individual scallop to the exact shape you got them in from the factory. The same goes with the spike part of the Spyderedge.

It takes a bit longer to sharpen your serrations with the 701 Profiles but you'll soon realize that it's the very best method for sharpening serrations. The 701 Profiles are the best kept secret in the serrated knife world. They are also a great sharpener for plain edged blades and are excellent for field use.

Now please realize I am a fan of the 204 Sharpmaker but not for serrated blades. It wouldn't hurt to use them sparingly for touching up a serrated edge. But repetative use will deform the serrations IMO. I only use the 701 Profiles and I have excellent luck with them.
