It is a traditional and useful walking stick in Eastern Europe. Country people could use it on mountain trails as a kind of multitool. The tip was a metal point and the handle a small hatchet. I've seen some highly ornate versions done by custom knifemakers. It wouldn't be hard to make one for real work, but our society probably wouldn't look kindly on people strolling through town with a longtailed hatchet.
I handled the prototype back in April and it is certainly a formidable tool for self defense in an urban setting. Not something I would want to carry for woods use or major chopping. However, for some added reach and devastating impact, the hawkin' stick is on point.
