These little axes's of John's are very intriguing to me...

Does anyone here have experience with any (I'm sure)

I'm torn between the belt hawk and spike in particular and looking for input
and pics of them or any other Jk hawk/hatchets you might own.

Post them if you got em :-)

I own a belt hawk, but no pics. It chops much more effectively than you might think, given the size. Fairly lightweight, all things considered, and quite compact. One of my favorite camp tools.

First hand experience is what I'm looking for, the pictures aren't necessary thanks Moniker!

This is a good thread to get started, some belt hawk and spike hawk in these videos: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1133616-YouTube-Videos

I really like my belt hawk, i have and have had and am always interested in hatches hawks and axes, belt hawk stands out against any of them as useful, simple classic design that gets the job done with pleasure all around

I don't just use it to peel apples though :D

It's processed a lot of kindling for me though it's hard to get good shots of a hawk I've found when in use

anyway, that's my two cents

It really comes down to how you are going to use them. The Belt Hawk was designed more for outdoors use, while the Spike Hawk was more for urban breaching work, with a bit of self defense tossed in.

What I like about my Urban Spike Hawk is the level of confidence that full tang construction brings to the task. You are not going to hurt it.

Thanks for the input John, The Belt Hawk would probably suit my uses best.

That spiker is very appealing too though.... hmmmm decisions decisions....

thanks guys for your take.

I like the belt hawk a lot for woods work. it's a great tool. I have a slightly different version and the only one I believe. Mine is 14 inches total. belt hawk max. same with my spike hawk. both are great tools and very useful.

I have John's Hunter's Hatchet. Light, solid, full tang construction. A great little hatchet, IMHO. While probably originally designed to assist a hunter in butchering large game, I find it to be an excellent all-around hatchet. I love mine and it has earned a semi-permanent place in my UTV for working on my property. :)

Here's the first hawk & my initial review.

I was out camping last year & while battening through a too big log I smacked the handle & broke a chunk off so I had John rehandle it with a little less wood.

Old handle.

I see you added the mid and bottom hollow pins. Mine only has the mid pin which I use with paracord to keep my grip from slipping when wearing gloves. With both hollow pins you could wrap the handle with paracord or add a braided guard which would be better. Just a thought for prospective purchasers.

Yup,I specifically asked John to put the middle tube in so I could put a d-guard on it,I just hadn't gotten around to it yet when I took that pic.
The forward lanyard did help to keep my hand from slipping.

I've put paracord d-guards on a couple of choppers, but wanted to keep this one more traditional looking with the leather.
The d-guard really locks the handle in hand.

Just a note, I have steel on hand for one Belt Hawk, or Hunter`s Hatchet, and for one Spike Hawk besides the one I have on order for this month. Due to some nasty price increases on the steel for these, if I decide to make more after this steel is gone, the price will be much higher.

Thanks for your pics and input guys!

I've narrowed my decision down to the standed belt hawk with dual lanyard tubes
or the modified spike that John posted in the same configuration, haven't decided
on the handle material yet... I'm leaning towards green micarta.
