I really like the Cassam tactical hawk. I'm in for one but not until my last custom hawk I ordered comes in (and I have to pay for it)

A belt hawk or hatchet is next on my list, but I'm wavering on handle material. I see most choose micarta, but the few I've seen in oak look wonderful. Is the oak a reasonable choice for durability over the course of time? The hawk/hatchet would see limited use on occasional camping and long hiking trips, so frequent hard use wouldn't really be a concern.

If I could i'd go Oak, the micarta is fantastic but I'm partial to wood, it wasn't an option at the time, or I didn't realize it.

Maybe Myke'll step in here in a while I think he had one re-handled in oak, it's a tough and good looking wood though IMO

Oak was the original handle material for these, then people started wanting micarta.

Good to know Oak is the original standard and the desire of some people who already have micarta. Thanks guys. Now to decide on a hatchet or belt hawk...

Good to know because when I can get one I will. I've needed one for a long, long time.

Here ya go Pete.

The original Oak handle I cracked while beating it through too big a hunk of wood.
Broke a chunk off to the second pin.It was still functional & I sawed the wood off just in front of the pin,but it looked funky with the one exposed pin hole....

so I had John put a taper towards the front on the new handle so I could still beat on the spine & not worry about damaging the handle if I find myself needing to split a bigger piece of wood again.

Thanks for all the photos and ideas!

John, I'll take a belt hawk with the tapered oak and two hollow pins, just like Mykel's. Since I already have three knives on order for June, make it for July or August, or until you get another order that needs the same steel. Thanks!

I know I'm a couple of days late to posting a picture to this thread but here is my hatchet. Mine is 12 inches in OAL and has 3 hollow tubes instead of solid pins.
