Haze's Tough Guy BK9 Passaround Discussion and Review thread

Murph, or, as I like to think of you, Navy Boi, you done anyting yet?

Moose

Yeah, I split a little kindling to get the wood stove going. No pics as I was the only one home. I did line up some test material for tomorrow though! Oh when I say it's sharp,

I mean it's SHARP!

I took some comparison shots with a basically unmodded BK9 a couple night ago for anyone not participating or that have not been blessed enough to handle this beast yet. It impresses me everytime I lay hands on it(the knife).

Ok so next to the squared clip-point, this angled pommel is my next favorite feature. I honestly can't think of a use or benefit to it over a squared pommel, but I will copy this at some point.

A little better view of the cut off swedge and more dramatic clip point.

Ok, I'm not a huge batoning fan, but for reviews I split wood with a knife. This thing cut through a 4.5"-5" maple log like it wasn't even there. It took all of maybe 6 whacks. The log wasn't even fully seasoned. The stove was out, I beat her properly, and I like to expose the inside of the log to direct flame to get her lit faster.

Victory! Oh, the deranged look is me deciding I'll be doing a mod similar to a BK9 soon.
IMAG1128.jpg

The squared clip point does very limited damage to your baton, I like it!

Ok I ran through a final bit of tests today. A little chop off with my basically unmodded BK9, a slight bit of shaving a stick or two and a little drawknife action.
My lab.

Nothing special, standard 2x4. First was Haze's monster.

She really chopped clean until the last 1/2", then she broke through with force.
2012-01-06_13-42-34_444.jpg

Time, 31sec , give or take a second or two.
2012-01-06_13-44-39_544.jpg

Now my trusty BK9.
2012-01-06_13-46-49_203.jpg

Time, 42 sec. Mine actually broke through the last 3/4". I made sure to rest my arm for about 20 min between floggings, I'm a professional in a similar skill.
2012-01-06_13-49-16_778.jpg

Next I just shaved a few bits off a stick laying nearby. Not trying to featherstick it, though I suck at that, so it'd look worse probably.

I'm really tempted to do the swedge removal, clip point squaring and pommel grinding. I love this knife. The edge wasn't a big deal to me, but it obviously paid off in the chop off.

2012-01-06_13-54-48_518.jpg

Last but not least, the draw knifing. I'm not necessarily skilled at this(yet), but I like the idea of it. I kinda wanted to see how the modified clip point would work for a hand hold. It wasn't bad, but for this at least the standard BK9 reigned supreme.

In the end, I want to send my BK9 to mrn8 and just keep Haze's. However, he'd probably kill me or get Moose to do it, so I'll have Haze's in the mail tomorrow. This thing has been a real treat to play with. The mods on this thing look a bit dramatic at first and kinda give it a butcher knife vibe, but really this beast handles very nimble and swift. I love it! Haze , thanks for loaning this piece out, Moose thanks for getting her done as always.

Just a heads up. I'll post the end of my review tonight. I am done with it*sob* and I'll be sending it off to Wisconsin tomorrow.

Edit: End of review is posted, she's getting the edge touched up by me and boxed tonight.

And where's the tough guy pic with your hair on fire?

Any pic of me is more manly than ANY pic involving fire. The pic of the hair that caught on fire would make this a NC-17 rated thread. J/k, I actually forgot.

Nice job, murph. Can't believe you forgot the tough guy pose. Man, you might have won that knife, since, Marines make the best tuff guy poses.

:D

The BK9 has landed in WI! When I saw the envelope sitting on my front step I knew it was either this or my Ares Ranger belt. Either way, I was going to be thrilled.

My first impression is that it feels quite nice in the hand, especially for such a long blade. The grind on it almost looks like it was meant to be there, but I can imagine it took off a good bit of weight. Tomorrow, I'll run out in the woods where I think a few pine trees went down in a storm and hopefully will be able to harvest some fatwood from that.

Here's what you get for today. The sheath just needs some molle clips, so it can ride on the outside of the AR-15 bag!

I went out with one purpose today, and that was to track down those pines I knew got taken out last summer. This is all land owned by my employer, so I frequently get to go play at lunchtime. I wanted to use the BK9 to harvest some fatwood off of those stumps. I got to where I knew at least one pine had gone down, and what a mess! This one got completely uprooted.

IMG_5407.jpg

I cleared some of the overgrowth with the BK9, which worked like a charm.
IMG_5409.jpg

I tried to chop into the lower trunk to see if I could get some of that sappy pine out of there. It was 50*F out and the trunk was still frozen solid. It took off the bark and a little of the outer layer. It was enough to tell me that if I take the chainsaw out, I can grab the lower portion and get some good chunks out of there for camping season.

IMG_5413.jpg

Well, that was kind of a bust and it was my only plan, so I took off to check on the tree fort I put up for fun one summer. By fun, I mean, there were some really good sight lines in case someone happened to have a bow with them. :) Looks like a tree fell on the upper deck! Another reason to take out the chainsaw.

Just clearing some deadfall...
IMG_5423.jpg

Second chop went right through. Slightly better performance than my BK10.
IMG_5449.jpg

We helped out mother nature on the way and picked up some crap. Also found a new, but waterlogged, Husqvarna chain. Looks like it didn't rust, either, so it must have been dropped recently.
IMG_5452.jpg

And the "beauty" shot, because I'm a photographer, so if it doesn't pose well, it's not good! It passed with flying colors!
IMG_5474.jpg

Hmmmm...what next. Nobody's cooked with it yet, maybe the BK9 will get to taste some venison.

Well, it's been crazy busy at work, but the BK9 got all cleaned up nice and we pulled KP duty. I think I'm gonna owe it some serious workout time tomorrow, because all the veggies and no meat made it mad!

IMG_5490.jpg

Sweet potatoes...no problem. The blade isn't really made for this, so a chef's knife or the curve of the BK 5 is more natural, but if I were doing potatoes at camp, this would be a fine choice.

IMG_5494.jpg

IMG_5500.jpg

A badass, I really am not...I'll have to work on that before I get that pic done tomorrow!
IMG_5521.jpg

On to peppers...ok, too much blade for this, but still fun to use the BK9 for anything possible.
IMG_5542.jpg

I leave the room for one minute and come back to find some serious cannibalism. Darth Tater really prefers the BK9 to a lightsaber. We'll have to contact George Lucas about some script modifications.
IMG_5565.jpg

Alright, now I'm going to sit down with the strop and see what looks interesting on Netflix. It should be all clean and sharp again tomorrow for some baton action and maybe some chopping. It actually still has a pretty decent edge, but there are a couple of rough spots on it. I just need to knock those down enough to make the cutting edge nice again.
