HD series

are they getting rid of the cqc12?

It would seem so, the HDs are apparantly getting phased out.
I have e-mailed EKI to ask them about it but they will be at the shot show untill the end of the week.
Il post the reply i get from them when i get it.

somebody on the eki side of things made some very poor descisions it seems. or else we wouldnt be hearing that they are cutting expenses by switching material. i would certainly like to hear the truth on this . funny thing is , i dont think well ever get the truth . I SMELL BULL CRAP . i agree with some here that the whole financial reasoning for this doesnt make sense. i expect to hear a bogus reason for all of this sooner or later .

As I posted in a thread under General Discussion, I spoke with a lady at Emerson Knives today & the HD-7 is not slated to be discontinued. She did say that the list only goes 12 weeks out.

gutsy - Ernest Emerson made a post on another forum, that due to the rising cost of titanium, they would be going to stainless steel on the non-locking side of all the framelocks in the future. The lock side will continue to be titanium. His reason for doing this was stated so that they will not have to make a big increase in price on their knives.

Personally I don't see this as a bogus answer. All you need do is look at the huge increase in ammo prices & you get an idea of the large price jump in brass & copper. Cripes a U.S. penny is worth more in China if it's melted down for the copper. As India & China's economy grow & they expand, the price on metals will only increase. Titanium is one of those in-demand metals.

Thats interesting ? the OP claims he got an e-mail from EKI saying the HDs were going to be discontinued

The liners are already steel and Ti. I got a Persian for one of my students about a week ago and it defo. had steel on the non lock side, other posters have complained about rust on that side as well.

I dont want to get this thread moved to political :D but China and Russia are buying unusually large amounts of Titaium and that will of course drive up the cost of Ti in the world market and as stated other metals like copper are in there as well, gold is also unusually high just now, but thats just the way it goes.
I hope it all pans out as I was hoping for a few other HDs from Emerson in the future :)

really, well why is it they would BS about anything?? thats silly imho.

is it a big conspiracy lol??

I don't see other manufacture'rs going to s.s. and ti. Some are already using all s.s. and some are still ti. If truth be told I am thinking that the s.s. liners will wear longer than ti cause they are harder. Could be wrong on this point but don't think so. I don't much care one way or another. I am moving to all framelocks anyways.

I remember a few years back I called to see if I could get a thicker locking liner put on a green handled 7a I had. Person I spoke to said probably not. My counter was that my 11 had a very thick locking liner on it so why shouldn't I be able to get one on my 7. Didn't float no matter how much asking I did. She stated that it was the luck of the draw as to what thickness of titanium sheeting they were able to get. Beats me but I have never had a problem with the locks moving or wearing prematurely.

The other reason I am moving to all frame lock folders is because the liner lock knives have been interpreted by some LEO's to be gravity knives as per Feb. issue of Blade mag. This is in NYS where I live. If I have a frame lock and no liners, I figure no problem, at least I hope that is the case.

Also all this talk about unaswered emails and talking to whoever at EKI. I get better info calling them for sure. I never have expected to talk to Emerson and probably truth be told don't want to. He has bigger fish to fry for sure. Just my 2 cents. keeepem sharp

PS my 13 has a thick liner lock on it and will probably keep that one just because of it.

The frame-lock is the way to go. You're right, Longbow. I'd still like to see two slabs of G-10 with a nested titanium locking bar. Less Titanium and less weight.

Cqc-12 is one of, if not my single favorite knfe I've ever owned. That includes knives costing twice as much, and others toted as "the best" avalible. I don't know if they will or not, but discontinuing the hd knives would be a "big" mistake for Eki imho. If anything, they should just raise the price and make all/more of thier knives frame-locks.
The cqc-12 I put with the sng, sebenza, mission mpf, and others. Thier liner locks I put with the milli, bm 800s, ect., and other liner-type locks. -Whole different league to me, and the frame-lock is well worth the price.

I agree the HDs are indeed the way to go. the 12 has been my favoured folder for a while now.

A nested Ti lock is an iteresting idea and would be good to see but but i dont think we will be seeing it any time soon !

This thread is just going round in circles now, may be the OP was just guilty of some light trolling ;) they did seem to be pretty sure they got an e-mail stating as much though
but it seems we all agree it would be a bad idea to get rid of the HDs.
I hope a definate answer appears soon. :)

i dont see why a framelock would be ok and a liner lock wouldnt, they will inertia open just like a liner lock knife,

agree framelocks are superior to liners though, i wish EKI would do something to the Ti side of there handles, it looks like its missing the G10 on that side, to me anyway, just doesnt really look right, i wish they would flame it or something lol.

1A---Yea, definitely mill, flute, groove or pock that slab of Titanium.

super heavy bead blast looks good
It would look pretty sweet blued as well i think.

Haze---Ernie went with tumbled Ti because the bead blast surface would get all scrached up, FWIW. At first, I did not like it but now I really do.

I bead blasted mine, its not that i didnt like the tumbled look, its just i like the feel and subdued look of the heavy blast finish more.
It has scratched up but its easy to just do it again when it gets really bad.

I would quite like to get an orange peal finish on it, that looks really good on all the knives iv seen it on.

I prefer the Bead Blast look over the Tumbled look too. I can understand why they made the change though. That said, when I get mine it may be getting sent out to be mod'ed a bit. I'm thinking Green Linen Micarta & Bead Blast the Titanium would be a nice combo.

Oh, if Titanium is so expensive, Emerson could use a premium SS nested locking bar. STR states SS makes a better lock-up than Ti. Man, I'd buy one.

Got this e-mail from EKI today:

Dear Sir,
We will still be producing the HD Knives. We just will not be producing them in the volume that we previously were. You can keep an eye on our website to see when they will be available.
Please let us know if you have any further questions. Thank you.
