Head cover

^ Thanks! Not mine though. Actually the wrap shape on the boy's head looks a bit strange (they must know of some other wrap technique). Usually its "doo rag" style.

Since it's mostly to protect my head from the sun, I ordered a High UV Protection Buff.

This one:

I think I will still get a cheapo Doo-rag from a military surplus for dirt times.

They are about the same. The Buff has a few models with extra features, like cold weather versions. I always carry a Recon Wrap. Even in summer it's not too heavy to use as a non-slip mask in smoke situations,.

Yeah, the base models are pretty much the same. I have a few Recon Wraps; I carry one daily and have one in my outdoors kit. I still carry a regular cotton OD bandana (military cravat) mostly because of the versatility. Those Buffs/Recon Wraps are great for both hot and cold weather with other uses in-between. I bought my wife a Buff (at REI) for Christmas and she loves it...both our kids now have their own:D

What I like about the thinner Wraps/Buffs is that you can also use them under a hat as a sweat band as well since they are so thin. One a recent biking trip, we had to ride a section of a dirt road, and the Wrap/Buffs came in handy to cover the nose and mouth with all the dust kicked up by vehicle traffic...worked like a charm!

I looked over the Buff patterns again but I can't get into any of them and the colors are terrible -- or is that just the colors on the monitor? If I ever see them in a store, I might be able to decide on one. Meanwhile, I have olive, black, and hi-viz orange Recon Wraps, so I'm covered. :)

I like that they stay in place, unlike a scarf or bandanna which can slip off too easily, and they fit snugly so smoke or dust doesn't blow in past them.

I never venture outdoors without some sun protection. I call it a "hat". Cabella's has a large selection to suit about anybody's needs. I like the broad brimmed models, but the boonies will do.

Tilley Hats are expensive, but I think they are great outdoors. Fairly light and I haven't found a way to tear it up. Covers the back of the neck, which is where I always burn

I thought so too Esav...

I ordered me the cashmere kaky one, and it came friday. In person it looks just like a brown and tan bandanna. Not too wild at all.

I think you will find in person, they look a bit better.

They are great, I already love mine and have carried it, or wore it alot since I got it.

Yeah, the one I got is a subdued mellow orange pattern

If you're going to go with something that large, consider a rayon sarong, which will be about as bulky but is much larger, but has a billion uses (like a gigantic bandana). I like to carry one when traveling because it can be used as a light hammock for rest stops, towel, cover up, etc. and if you're a woman then it can also be used as a skirt, shawl, etc. Truly versatile.

I know sarongs can be versatile, so please forgive the stupid questions.

1) Why rayon over cotton?

2) Have any sources for them?

I like wearing a boonie, but those buff/recon wraps look cool. I'll have to pick one up.

average gimp: sorry for the late reply, but I forgot about this thread. I like the rayon ones because they dry faster, they don't fade nearly as quickly and they seem more durable.

Unfortunately I do not have a source I can recommend. I picked up a bunch last time I was in Thailand, but I've gotten some locally also.

Thanks for letting me know!

I use the old triangular bandages from the military, they are made out of long staple cotton, very nice, soft on the skin....

I also have some current issue scarves, made out of like T-Shirt material, they too are nice, plenty long so they would be easy to tie.... One of these things...

I got mine at CountyComm, but they seem to be gone....

I also have a Tilley hat, which I very much quite like.

And I have a shemagh as well, but for summer use, unless you were trying to really shade yourself from the sun, bedouin style, not the best option, I would think.

And I have one of those Buffs, as well.
