I thinking about buying a head lamp. Has anyone used a zebra light lamp? or is there a better lamp using AA or AAA batteries?

Thank you.

Have tried a bunch. I think the new Princeton Tec EOS with the rebel LED is the best in the group that don't use a separate battery pack. No experience with the separate battery pack variety.

Zebralight has nice flood for camp, not so good for night hiking.

I think my next headlamp will be the Fenix HP 10 it just came out about a month or two ago, uses AA bright, with good run times around $65 might be a little on the heavy side though, I think its 4 AA's.

Hard to beat a zebra light, best headlamp I own.

G'day Takao

I don't know if its the best, but I'm more than satisfied with my petzl MYO XP that runs on 3 AA batteries

Kind regards

Sears sells a little Dorcy three LED headlamp for nine bucks and change. They use three AAAs and will burn about 30 hours although they do dim a bit after about half that. I keep one in each of my cars and a couple around the house. They've become must haves for working in any dark or dimly lit area. Really handy.

I've never had my petzl tikka xp found wanting, some don't seem to like them but I have no complaints. But any of the cheap LED ones aren't bad, I give them for Christmas and bdays etc to people who don't know much about them and they are always good. To be honest I used one before the petzl and it was great, but I wanted something brighter so I could go prawning at night.

I am another Fan of the princeton tech Eos. it provides alot of light in a small one piece package, it is also pretty waterproof, and the batteries, last a long time.

I like the Princeton Tec EOS and the Quad. I especially like the "Tactical" version even with their unfortunate names ("tactical" is so overused). The tactical versions of the Quad and EOS have flip up red filters which I appreciate when I am trying to not obliterate my dark adjusted eyes.

Seems like there are few bad headlamps out there as long as you don't go for a real cheap one. I use a Petzl Tikka XP and have been very happy with it.

Got one last year for leaving the deer stand after dark. A Master Vision brand at the local dept store. Like 6 or 7 bucks, runs on coincell lithium batteries and clips to the bill of my hat. Still running on the same batteries and I use it a lot.

I use an Energizer brand LED headlamp. Takes AAA batteries. I am very pleased with it. Adjustable power settings, red and white light, easy to use.

I have a Tikka XP and I love it. It goes everywhere with me and has even seen some swimming/cave exploring time. I have 4 headlamps and this is by far my favorite go to headlamp.

Ive got a Petzl Tikka Plus. Great little headlamp with reasonable waterproofing (ie. rain).

Comes with 3 white lighting modes (maximum, economic and flashing mode), gets 55 hours at max output and 140hours at economic.

The newer Tikka plus comes with a battery charge indicator light and a red led that also strobes.

I highly recommend Petzl's headlamp range.

I concur...the word tactical is overused but the Light is bombproof just like the Petzel Tac Tikki Plus. Both units are part of their "tactical" line up which is built for military conditions and use.

I know personally of a rather large shipment of Petzel T. T. Plus sent to the sandbox for an Airborne unit. They use them for making improvised landing pads with the white, flashing white, flashing red and steady red to create the four corners of the pad. I also know of of some other elite units using them as well.

Princeton made their "tac" light to be on par with the Petzel T.T. Plus so they could capture some of that same market.

Bottom line if it is built for military use and especially those in the Spec Ops community then it is going to be up to any challenge we civilians will give it in our weekend outings. I'd say the Princeton tac model has a slight advantage now over the Petzel Tac because it is basically the same unit but can take recharagable batts and Lithium plus is a regulated LED and the Petzel is not. Also the Prince has a better pivot swivel for rotating the head down a full 90 degrees and the Petzel does not. Also the Prince comes with a handy built in tool to open up the batt compartment that the Petzel doesn't.

I sell both models in my biz and I and my staff hard core test all these products before we recommend them...also some of our clients are extremely hard on these products and give us feedback on how they perform. Either one is tops!

there are a plethora of headlamps on the market (good thing) that vary quite a bit.

I own a Black Diamond Cosmo that I use when there is high likelihood I'll be using it along the trail (hunting pack, etc)- bright light, AAA batteries (lighter that way) and good run time

I also own a Petzel e-lite when I'm trying to keep weight to a minimum, weighs less than 1.0 oz (w/ batteries!)- nice little light that will do a pinch

I have a few of the cheaper headlamps,(under $30) and the one I like the best (even with the drawbacks of only having one setting and uncommon batteries) is the older version of the Photon Freedom micro-light the new one has a clip body and comes in more colors and the make a Doug Ritter model now also. Plus the thing is only like $10Here is a link.

I also like the Rayovac sportsman extreme headlamp it has a removable over the top strap and it also has a flip over diffuser that softens the light and it has a color setting to help preserve your night vision. This one is under $25 here is a link.
