Ok I know that this is a knife site but I also know that the ESEE/RAT subforum are a group of people who really USE knives for what they were meant.

So, I have a question for all of you down-to-earth knife using folks. What kind of head lamp do you use? What do you think is the best out there for the money, knowing that it will be used hard in real world situations just like my ESEE knives (many times simultaneously)?

This is my current favorite: http://jerkingthetrigger.wordpress.com/2010/03/18/review-princeton-tec-quad-tactical/

What are the situations in which you intend to use the light? Princeton Tec also makes a lamp called the EOS Tactical which has many of the same features as the Quad Tactical but has more throw (the beam reaches further). I tend to prefer the Quad since it is such a great area light.

I really like Princeton Tec products and their "tactical" line offers some really great features to the outdoorsman.

Good thread. I need to get myself one as well. Sometimes it's a pain to hold the light when a free hand is needed.

Amen. I carry a hand-held flashlight daily because I would look goofy wearing a headlamp in the office. :) But in the woods, I rarely carry hand-held lights anymore. Headlamps rule.

+1 on the petzels. I have a black diamond one too but they are a little more $.

I snatched this PETZL MYO XP from rei for 30 bucks its got 3 power modes plus strobe mode i use it when out in the woods or doing repairs around the house and garage ... excellent light IMO....

I have and like two Princeton Tec products. I have an Eos and and Apex. They have both been modified with Seoul LEDs and reflectors. A cheap plastic one in the Eos and a McGizmo in the Apex. Due their size/weight difference they fill two different roles but cover all the bases IMHO. Even without modification I think they are both great.

If I were to buy a bombproof headlamp right now I'd get the Surefire Saint. I've handled a couple specimens of both the Minimus and the Saint and I think they're .

 +1 for a LED Petzl, a few great models to chose from. Haven't had a problem yet :D

I love convincing people how nice headlamps are to work with. I have a good buddy who is an alarm tech so hes in attics and dark spaces all the time, He was a surefire nut but once i convinced him my $30 princeton tec EOS headlamp was better for his application than his $150 surefire he hasnt used it at work since. :) I gave him mine and bought 2 more for myself (1 in each Bail out bag) Check out the princeton tec EOS line, those are my favorite little headlamp.

Petzl and Princeton seem to be the big ones.

I have one of the $25 Energizers from the Wal-store. Weatherproof, multiple modes, etc. Not overly fancy but when it craps out I won't feel too bad.

Petzel make great lights. They vary in lumen out put of around 38 lumens which is great for walking around and general use to the higher end models pumping out 350 lumens.

If you are just using it for general use the lower output models are great and as already said the Petzl Myo is also an excellent lamp. I have owned a petzl in some form or another for years and never had a problem.
There other head lamps out there such as Zebralight that are a good light but the beams are more throwie then the petzel and are not, in my humble opinion, good as the Petzl.

I've carried a Petzl Tikka since 2002 and while it's not the most powerful light out there, it's very simple and durable. I do have another Petzl and Princeton Tec with different settings and pivoting heads, but the simplicity of the Tikka keeps bringing me back to it. During the eight or so years of use, it's seen extended use in extremely cold temps while winter mountaineering and been exposed to plenty of seawater while paddling on the Atlantic. I've also used it a fair bit on my fire helmet without issue.
Great little light:thumbup:

I have used a petzl in both iraq and afghanistan i like it because you can use the white light when needed or you can slide the red lens over when you need to be tactical

The Petzel's are great, I have a Tactikka with a carry case that holds a set of spare batteries in my edc kit, and I also carry a leatherman Monarch 300 clipped to my pocket. I love my high power lights, but for the little every day things I use a light for the Monarch has been great. One AAA led light that I always have on me!

I use a Zebralight Headlamp H31 that runs on 1 CR123 battery. The lumen ratings are 220 / 120 / 43 / 24 / 5 / .5 lumens. On high this thing is VERY BRIGHT! It's a great, durable, versitle headlamp. You can also take the light off the head piece and use it as a small flashlight, plus it runs on the same batteries as my other LED flashlights.

DH had a big Petzl Myo (thei new regulated one), I use an older Zipka, and we both had an E+Lite by Petzl.

I have the six LED energizer headlamp from walmart. 2 red LEDs, 2 white flood LEDs, 2 white spot LEDs. It has 4 modes red, flood, spot, flood and spot. I think it was only $15.
