Heading to Las Vegas in Dec. Any tips?

Thanks guys.

We've decided to drive down to Carmel for a couple of days rather than Yosemite. We'd have loved to go to Yosemite, but the wife is worried about snow conditions. Don't see too much of it here these days, and I've never had to drive with chains. The coast road is supposed to be fantastic, so looking forward to that.

We plan to head out to the Grand Canyon, and I hope to get at least a few holes of golf in as Vegas has some bueatiful courses.

Any good outdoors (i.e. knife) shops in Vegas?

I know that there is at least one knife shop in LV, I can't remember the address though, It's the one that was in an episode of CSI.

It's been a couple of years since I was in LV.

(yeah I'm real handy) But yes there is one.

I'll second going to Red Rock canyon just outside Vegas. Beautiful place as is Hoover Dam and Lake Meade.

If you like Italian food, lookup "Battista's Hole In The Wall" just a block off of the strip. Some of the best food anywhere and the restaurant decor is great.

Go see the light show over Freement Street downtown.

The shows are expensive but Cirque De Solei's "Mystere" is absolutely amazing and well worth the $100 or so in my opinion.

The main hotels/casinos on the strip are interesting to walk through. Ceasars, New York New York, Bellagio, Venitian, Mirage and Treasure Island all have interesting things to see that are free.

If you want a nice but moderately priced place to stay I recommend Harrahs. They are right in the middle of the strip. Nice accomodations but not as ritzy as many of the others. Another nice middle priced place is the Gold Coast just a little way off the strip. I think the gaming is a little more generous there too. It's where the locals go to gamble.

If you want to pay a little more Treasure Island and the Hilton are two of my favorites as far as hotel accomodations. I have never stayed at the top dollar places like Ceasers, Luxor or Bellagio. Avoid Circus Circus. I heard they were revamping the place but the last time I was there it was pretty bad.

I never found driving around to be that bad and I have been there during some pretty big conventions. All of the hotels have free parking areas. I prefer to rent a car rather than take a cab everywhere.

They also have a monorail that runs the whole length of the strip that is a good and reasonable way to get around. It drops you off right at the doors of most hotels.

Good luck and have fun.

yeah there is one , its pricey and most of the locals avoid it. But if you want to see alot of stuff....they have alot of stuff. Way overpriced , who pays MSRP + on a BM or production folder anymore....expect to if you shop there.

Hey guys. :)

Now that the search function's back I've finally found the old thread to say Thanks a lot for the help & advice! We had a great time. Didn't get to any outdoorsy shops in Vegas as we didn't hire a car. Definite must-do next time! The Rodeo was on at the time & the retail show that goes along with it was worth a visit. Only one custom cutlery chap, but the workmanship on a lot of the leatherwork for sale was awesome.

Frisco was great. Big Sur was fantastic, & we had sun the whole trip! :D

Can't wait to go back again sometime. :D

Go to Vegas.com to look for a room. You can find one in pretty much any price range. I didn't eat at any of the buffets, but I hear that they are a bit fancier thanin the old days and MUCH more expensive. Vegas has more good restaurants than you can shake a stick at, but they ain't cheap. if you are not from the west coast, you should make the pilgrimage to In And Out Burger. You will discover where Ray Kroc stole the idea for the "special sauce" for the Big Mac and wonder out loud why he didn't just go ahead and steal the recipe for a real hamburger patty too...lol.
