Heads up to fellow Buck Knife collectors

Be careful boys.....don't say anything negative about GEC if you go over there ;)

You know, I have been vocal in my support for GEC over on the Porch and for good reason. However, they are not infallible, neither is Buck. If you have criticisms to share in regards to GEC, there is not a better place to air such complaints than the Porch. There have been plenty of barbs thrown around towards both companies as they pertain to the Forum knife which just goes to show that many of us share different opinions and perspectives.

I know JD Bear's post was likely meant in good fun, but to some of you who perhaps do not venture too far from the Buck sub, it can be misleading. There are staunch GEC fans over on the Porch, no doubt, but you should have the freedom to be critical if that is your desire. GEC's reluctance to produce stainless is a legitimate criticism and probably the one thing that tends to ruffle a lot of feathers. You should be able to air that concern and others without fear of getting flamed. Just be prepared to experience legitimate rebuttals to your equally legitimate points. ;) After all, we are on a discussion forum.

Regardless. This forum knife business is bringing a lot of interest to Buck and its sub here and I count that as a good thing. Some of my very first knives as a boy were made by Buck and I still have my 119 which was my very first fixed blade. It is likely inevitable that Buck will be the forum knife for 2018 and as the conversation evolves and churns, I find myself getting more and more enthusiastic about the prospect. There is nothing in place that states the only cutlery firm allowed to make the Forum knife is GEC, it just so happens that they are one of the very few firms left, if not the only one in years past, to be willing to make us a Forum knife. Case has outright refused and many other firms are simply not around any longer.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Buck and @skblades is doing a tremendous job, I laud his efforts and I really hope the knife turns out to be something special.

Lighten up dude...

Lighten up dude...

I am not entirely certain what your point is. I felt I articulated myself perfectly well without stepping on anyone's toes. If I am wrong or if you would like to expound a bit, I am more than willing to listen.

Otherwise, either I offended you by simply quoting your post, or you did not read my post entirely, or you misunderstood the points I was attempting (perhaps unsuccessfully) to get across. I can be unnecessarily detailed in my writing here but I do so on purpose. It can be rather difficult, even at the best of times, to convey the nuances of conversation in written discourse, so in many cases I find that too many details can be better than none, as long as they are crafted appropriately.

If I gave you offense, please accept my apologies. The intent of my post was not to single you out, it was simply to address the statement you made and provide clarity to folks who may be unfamiliar with the Porch.

If you are simply telling me to recognize the frivolity in your statements, please understand that I already had done so.

I know JD Bear's post was likely meant in good fun, but to some of you who perhaps do not venture too far from the Buck sub, it can be misleading.

The focus of my statements were for the benefit of others, as demonstrated below.

It was stated by a number of folks that they do not venture too far from the Buck sub, I wanted to provide some clarity in regards to the Porch. We discuss many different cutlery firms there, including Buck. GEC is widely respected, but they are by no means the only topic of discussion, nor are they considered to be gods amongst factories. All I wanted to convey is that folks here should not be deterred from expressing their thoughts, critiques, etc on the Porch, regardless of cutlery firm. They should feel just at home there as they do here.

The annual forum knife discussion always tends to bring out the worst in what is an otherwise very civil place, but even so, it is still a terrific forum and Buck is getting an incredible amount of attention. This a a good thing for Buck and a great thing for skblades and potentially a terrific thing for everyone.

thanks OH, i wouldn't have known either. Unfortunately, knives I like aren't even in the running. i own own 2, 300 series knives and neither were bought less than 35 years ago. A 501 is my minimum knife.

Oooooookkkkk.......it was a joke man. Maybe I should be apologizing to you for making one that you didn't find funny. I think the folks here can take care of themselves in any part of the forums they choose to venture to without a protective disclaimer about the traditional forum. I don't take offense to anything you or anyone else says on a pocket knife forum because that's just a little ridiculous. I stand by the joke that I made because I thought it was pretty dang funny and harmless. I also think that if it upset you in anyway or thought I was going out of my way to be derogatory toward the traditional forum in general, then maybe you do need to lighten up.

You are still completely misunderstanding my points.

Which is fine, but at this juncture, any further discussion regarding the matter is pointless.

I am neither offended nor did I intend to give offense. I do wish you a good day though.

Dylan...I get what you're saying, I think this is becoming an issue for no reason so it should be dropped. You have a good day as well.

Hi All, first post in this sub (but aim to change that) although I do watch for Bucks on the exchange regularly. Regarding the 2018 club knife, the 501 was popular (I voted for it), but the fact that it locks prohibits it in some countries. While nothing is settled, sentiments are thus in favor of the 301, since a number of the traditionals sub members live outside the US.

BP_ BP_ I understand your question on the point of multi-blades. While no expert, I can say this. First, having different shape and size blades in one knife is practical, and sometimes very practical for people who use their knives in their daily work. (Horsewright, a BF member, has shown some great photo collections of his life on the ranch, where a certain blade is preferentially used for a given task.) I think for a lot of us however it comes down to two things. First, there's the multitude of patterns of multiblade traditionals, which when closed are in and of themselves quite beautiful. The second is a hunch that since the old time carbon steels do not have great edge retention compared to modern steel, having several sharp blades, each used for a different purpose meant that you could go through a day without the struggle of a dulled edge.

I appreciate the practical aspect of it, as well as the aesthetic. Back in the day, there was no “super steel” and you couldn’t run home to the sharpening system any time you needed a reprofile. I do find myself (when looking for pleasure) tending to gravitate toward the multi blade knives/slipjoints that have a look favoring a single blade or a lock back.

It may also be something subconscious in the back of my mind, trusting a blade locked in place moreso than a non locking blade. Not that I use my knives especially hard in every situation, and definitely not an abuser, but some scenarios call for my blade to be used at an “odd” angle, and I think honestly it just makes me a little nervous. I appreciate your reply, thank you. Points well made.

Some of us, actually quite a lot :D over in Traditional would like to have a multi-blade knife in a decent stainless steel (154) with no verdigris ridden brass liners and you know what? Only Buck can provide such a thing! CASE doesn't, Queen's dead, Böker Germany doesn't and GEC just won't:rolleyes:

Before to much opinion flies here, the Traditional forum mods have halted discussion on this subject until some issues can be ironed out next week. Would be best to go to Traditional forum to read last couple of pages and catch up......300Bucks

Going to be a GEC vs. Buck poll set up by one of the mods early next week - that is the next "official step" in the process. Dreaming and talking about what you like for fun is still okay (there are two threads in the traditional forum on the 2018 knife, one is still active). OH

Well, since I posted a few hours ago the second thread was shut down. Feel free to dream on here in this thread about great Buck 301 ideas, but as always in the Buck forum, play nice! OH

This was the manner it fell with me. So, I didn't vote. Perhaps next time. DM

The official poll is up now between a Buck 301 based pocketknife and a GEC 14 based pocketknife. Either will be a unique SFO for Blade Forums members; the Buck could end up being a two blade with Clip main and Sheepfoot secondary on two springs with upgraded blade steel. It will be a cool knife if Buck wins the vote. I'd like to own a custom Buck 300 series pocketknife, so I've voted. OH
