Bookie vouching for the Akubras was all it took for me to get one.
I second the Akubra. Have had one since at least 96.

So that piece of Australian legend just arrived home.

It is well made and sure looks good (until I put it on my head). I'll report back once it got some field time.

The only concern I can see right away is that I'm bald and the inside top is in polythene or similar clear/soft plastic.
Which is not ideal for direct contact on the skin.

Edit - Not sure if I'll get credit for ingenuity OR get flamed for a sacrilege mod but I just solved the plastic on skin problem. First I was thinking of Velcroing some fabric and while handling the Velcro I noticed how thick and breathable the "soft" side was. So nevermind the fabric. I went for soft Velcro only.

So far so good. I'm no longer have that sticky plastic feel on the head. Once again - Time will tell if this was a good idea.

Uhhh....i hate to tell you this but i think he was referencing what is in his hands....but if it works, it works, right?

I will be getting a Tilley when weather cools down....too hot here even for their version of a warm weather hat....this is near tropical and something more as a Panama is almost too much....

Oh and I vouch for the Tilley's too :-) as I have few

Got the light/nylon wrinkle proof one for travel and "urban" sun/rain protection

Got the a dark hemp one for hunting

And a large heavy cotton one for working outside in sunny days.

I have grown up on a farm, and Gulf Coast brown as berries since toddlerhood and swimming as a dolphin and then a lifetime of working outdoors....when they cut enough of your face off due to skin cancer, you learn to start wearing a hat...

Some one told me horror stories like that when I was in my teen. Thank God I didn't have to experience it first hand to take the advice. I respect the sun and its power.

Much of it has to do with how strong the sun is where you live, and your own complexion.....but we have a fair amount of Cherokee in the genes and still with constant strong burning sun, it can getcha....

Nice! I pulled the liner out of mine a long time ago. Once you get used to a nice rabbit felt hat you won't want to back to cotton.

Looks like a scene out of a horror movie...

I mean the photo of me above....

Right - It's in the woods on my way to small game hunting. Few seconds before there was 6inch birch tree across the road. The ASTK took good care of it. I could of go over it with the 4Runner but I tough it would be nice to take it out since it could probably save the life of one dumb kind on quad taking the trail for a race track.

Never miss an excuse to use a Kuk :-)

Edit - LoL - I didn't see "of me" at first and I thought you were referring to my pic.

Now that's an even better idea.
But not something I would of dared to do right out of the box. But I'll keep in in mind when the lining will start too look bad enough. Thanks!

You can stuff it back in but it tends to fall out again once you remove the stitching that keeps it in. I used to take it out in summer and put it in in winter since it sorta acts like a vapor barrier. If I had to do it again I would have left it in.

Here's a history of the Akubra brand

They're the "iconic" Australian brand, sorta like their Stetson. I think they make hats for their military too

I think they used to do the military and the rangers ones long time ago. Not sure if it is still prevalent.

The Akubras will be phased out like the Pith helmet. It's not lucrative to make things that last too long :-(

I bought the Akubra and the liner got ripped out while driving to Chesliegh. Then me mates at the Royal Pub proceeded to tell me that my hat was bad luck....Tooheys Red was running out the vents. Dunlop tread pattern from Oz work boots were all over it. The hat holds at least 30 wombat droppings and you know what? It still fit me as we got ready to head back to the station! Sure doesn't take long to break in an Akubra!

Can someone local translate what Bookie just said?
He lost me at Tooheys :D

If someone started talking such around here it would be time to start CPR.....or past time to call the MPs...

Sounds as if he had help breaking in the new hat the same way we would help a guy break in his new stainless thermos by playing soccer with it in a hangar....

Whew!!.. I'm not alone ,,I thought i was the only one who didn't know what a Tooheys was.
Im from south Texas Bookie,, please forgive my lack of knowledge on the local lingo:)
but i like your hat!!:thumbup::)

Sounds as if it was filled with ale and walked/stomped all over....suprised nobody did a burn-out on it to get the new bad luck out of it.....

I have only HEARD of such behavior, you understand?.......look at that face...as innocent as Mister Rogers....or Howdy Doody....

Now, THIS guy just on the way to his next victim, or just leaving his last, is obviously the one to keep an eye on.....if you can even recognize him in the crowd as he watches your every move.....look for the hat....it is your only hope...
