Headwear!

Awesome combo! I almost bought that model pith helmet but I didn't think I could wear it around town without looking like I was on safari.

My Akubra is the campdraft model. It's more or less identical to the original Stetson Open Road hat. Akubra used to make hats for Stetson back in the day as a subcontractor or whatever. The hat's really old fashioned aka unstylish... The brim is completely round rather than being wider in front and back, and the crown is very tall without any taper. So it looks dorky but it's very functional. The big brim protects your whole head from the sun and the tall brim lets the heat rise off your head.

That being said, I'd buy a more stylish one next time

My thoughts exactly, cool display but not something I could get away with wearing daily although if anyone could I could, I try to be a little different.

I've taken to wearing a cowboy hat all the time mostly to protect my hearing aid from rain. One drop and it can be temporarily or sometimes permanently disabled and I'm deafer than I am with it.

I'll have to give these Akubra's a look see. Heck it looks good on Bookie, ought to be smashing on bawanna, iffen they make one big enough that is. I got a really fat head.

61cm looks like Akubra's biggest off the shelve size. They can make them bigger on order. Here's I chart size I stole from Tilley.

Akubra's got a broader range and perform well in heat, rain and mildly cold weather.

I bought an Irish walking hat (think bucket hat) while I was in Ireland as my boar skin aussie hat looked a little out of place. It's made of wax cloth and quite warm on wet chilly days in spite of not having any insulation. The water streams down the brim and it's wide enough it doesn't flow into your collar. The heat rising off your body gets trapped under the brim and you stay pretty toasty. I could see why they would be popular in Ireland. We didn't run into too much of their famous wet weather, but the one day we got dumped on, the walking hat really helped out.

I think it cost me 40 euros, which is a lot for what it is. But I have gotten more day to day use out of that hat than any souvenir or trinket.

I do wish the hipsters hadn't latched onto the flat driving caps as well. I love those too. I have and had a nice horehound cap for a few years that I love in the autumn and winter. The problem is that it's too trendy. I really like it, but when they fall out of fashion, I'm going to look like a mook. If I were 10 years older, it wouldn't be a problem. People would just assume that I am a regular guy in his 40's that likes that kind of hat. At 34, I look like an aging hipster grasping at straws who is trying to hang onto his youth as he slides closer to 50 than 20:p

My best friend this summer has been a cheap snap-brim Aussie style fishing hat. I bought it at Academy for less than $15, and it's been a lifesaver. My step-dad bought a new pontoon boat, so my mom, wife, daughter, and I have spent a couple of weekends out on the lake. Keeps the sun off my face, has plenty of breathing vents as to not get stuffy, and wrings out nicely when we have circle back and fish it out of the water when the wind rips it off my noggin :o

.

With your mustache you've gotta buy that pith helmet! Get a monocle and a pipe and talk with a British accent. After a few days in the office they'll probably give you an early retirement!

I have an Akubra slouch hat. Love it.

i've worn my beige tilley hat 3-seasons for over a decade. still going strong. have a green wool winter tilley one with ear flaps for winter. have a panama plantaion hat, but only wear it when it is blazing hot, which is rare here.

considered a pith, resisted so far.

I've been wearing the pith helmet for a couple weeks, and while it's great at keeping me cool if I soak it in water, it's not that cool when it's dry. I sweat like a pig with the thing on when it's hot and humid . I think it's because the leather sweat band is too thick and it's blocking airflow. If I'm walking at a brisk pace I do get some airflow up there and it's much cooler. I'm going to try to replace the sweatband with cotton or at least thin out the leather band

I bought the "big noggin" version of the hat, which is the same size as the regular hat but with a wider head band . I think with the regular band you wouldn't have the same problem.

I've gone back to the Akubra. Even on 95 degree humid days it still keeps me pretty cool. My Panama hats ares still the coolest, but they're too fragile and too expensive to replace. I might get one of those "Tokyo straw" hats I think they're called. It's just plastic coated paper, an idea that doesn't appeal to me, but they're supposed to be tough and waterproof and light.

My poor old Akubra

It's getting colder out so I've switched to my fall hat. It's a gen-u-wine Stetson hat in sort of a German/Alpine style. It's made from "Imperial" grade felt, meaning they use the thicker felt they usually use for cowboy hats rather than the thinner fedora grade stuff.

Didn't know Stetson made a hat like that, new stuff everyday.

I've taken to wearing that nice Dobbs hat you sent me on a regular basis. Somedays by Australian felt cowboy hat and somedays the Dobbs. It's a nice comfy hat and I sometimes think I'm a better man when I wear it.

I did upgrade it a bit and hung my Nepal Khukri pin on the band, looks pretty dapper is I do say so my own self.

Glad you like it! Sounds like you made it extra snazzier. Take a pic!

Stetson used to make all sorts of cool hats. Their newer ones are made from really thin/cheap felt. They put a ton of powder and shellac to make it tougher. I'd say mine was made in the late 70's or early 80's

Collecting old hats is a lot like collecting knives. You can identify a hat by what union label it has under the sweatband and from that figure out what factory it was made in and roughly what era

That's my holy grail hat. It's called "The Gay Prince". They made them back in the 40's back when that meant something different.

Berkley- that pic is cool.

I've got a Tilley- hemp one that kinda bit the dust early. Have to return it at some point.

Finally got around to a picture. I wore this thing to a big fishing association dinner last night. Wore it all evening and forgot I had it on, Now that's a comfortable hat.

This is the one Blue sent me awhile back with my added Nepal Khukri pin.

And my mostly summer hat, first cowboy hat that ever fit proper on my big head. Got it down in Virginia City last summer. Had another Nepal Khukri pin so it got one too.

Got one more winter cowboy hat, kind of a crushable Australian hat but it don't have a Khukri pin so until it does I didn't take a picture of that one.

Glad it's working out! That hat sits so lightly on your head you barely notice it's there. That can be a problem if it's windy out, though, as it can fly off your head without you knowing.

I've also been working this Stevens hat into my rotation. It's a "back bow" hat, meaning the bow is on the back of the hat rather than on the side. The style was popular for a few years in the late 40's/ early 50's. Which is probably when this hat was made. I think Stetson bought Stevens out in 60's.

It had never been worn when I bought it. It still has the original price tag in it!

i've shifted to my winter tilley, green wool with ear flaps (folded up inside the hat for now).
it has a favourite badge, a greyhound searching all over for his prey while the object of
his search, a rabbit, hides under his belly.

That's one sneaky rabbit. I do that alot with my supervisor. Stay close by where she never expects it and she can never find me.

It's getting a bit nippy hereabouts so I broke out my dongbei ren hat today. I picked it up in Beijing one cold Chinese winter and my Chinese friends said it made me look like a dongbei ren (northeastern person). This kind of hat is worn in those cold northeastern regions of China and in many other cold areas around the world.

When I got it the language barriers kept me from figuring out what kind of fur it is. A trapper friend later let me know that it is muskrat.

That's a nice one Mr. Wallace. I have that style of hat (not nearly as nice and just generic) but I nearly broke it out this morning. Has been a might chilly round these parts of late.
