Someone here at work mentioned this today, and said they saw it on the internet, or news.

Is this true?

I'm flying next week, and this would solve a lot of my worry, and headaches.

Can anyone confirm this?

Daniel

Effective tomorrow, December 22nd they are relaxing the rules on scissors and some tools. Here are some extracts from the TSA website:

"Beginning December 22, scissors with a cutting edge of four inches or less and tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers smaller than seven inches will be permitted on board. Scissors longer than four inches and tools such as crowbars, drills, hammers, and saws will continue to be prohibited from carry-on bags. Lighters will continue to be banned from the cabin of aircraft and in checked baggage."

"Changes to the Prohibited Items List
TSA is updating the prohibited items list to more effectively confront current threats to aviation. Changing the prohibited items list to allow certain high volume items that do not pose a threat enables TSOs to focus on identifying explosives.
• Small Scissors are Now Permitted
Current data shows that scissors and tools make up about 25 percent of the total number of prohibited items nationwide. The number of scissors discovered at checkpoints and the time and effort dedicated to positively identifying them is disproportionate to the threat they pose. Metal scissors with pointed tips and a cutting edge four inches or less, as measured from the fulcrum, are now allowed. Metal scissors with blunt tips, plastic scissors and ostomy scissors will continue to be permitted.
• Tools
From April to October, 2005, 468,033 tools were discovered at security checkpoints. Screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and other tools, (except crowbars, drills, hammers, and saws) seven inches or less in length are now permitted. "

They were going to allow knives but there was too much political flack so they backed off. Alas.

This is all so pointless

To quote one of my favorite bands, Five Iron Frenzy...
"...it was on the internet
so then it must be true."

LOL, I love them, and that's a good quote...

Sorry, but no.

Thanks all for the info. No, I didn't believe it at first, but I just wanted to be sure. It really did sound too good to be true. I did hear about the scissors, and tools, so that wasn't a surprise.

The information seems to indicate that one MAY take 3" knives on board. However, you MUST take TWO of them. And they must be Wharncliffes and joined together somewhere in a pivoting manner. There seems to be no requirement that the joint must be either riveted or permanent.

:p :D :D

So it's Christmas day and I've got to send my daughter home to her Mom. I decide hey, I've a thought. So I pick my smallest most innocent looking SAK, slip it into my pocket. As I'm checking her in I inform the counter she is a minor and I'd like to go up see her off. >Show ID get pass.

Security line... shoes, glasses cell phone, belt buckle and yes cute little SAK with >3" blade into the grey tray. All is well tell you guessed it...my grey tray goes through. "Check" the lady yells. The conveyor belt stops. Lady two is shown the monitor. Lady two scoops up and holds it front of me defiantley. NOT ALLOWED, "but ma'm I have heard that TSA has relaxed their restrictions and I am not a passenger just seeing my daughter off, (daughter does sweet innocent pose) Lady two calls supervisor over, "NOT allowed" he guaffs. "Ok well hold it for me and I'll be back". I says. Surprised blank stare from both of them.... I simply did not provide the opportuninty for them to "confiscate" it. After some thought super decides to send me through the exit escorted holding my SAK till I cross the last possible line and hands me back the knife.

Daughter rolls her eyes, "I can't take you anywhere Dad, merry xmas", I kiss her on the forhead and she is off. I go back to my car.

SO NO folks... not yet.

Dude, you're a rebel! Good thing this thread wasn't concerned about rocket launchers allowed on planes....

Checked luggage is OK. I did that last week. I pack my usual SAK with locking 3.25-inch blade. This is less likely to get stolen out of my checked bag than something fancy.

I got lucky. I ended up driving down in the GOV, and was able to bring a few blades. I brought my SwissTool, BM 730CFHS, A.G. Russell Ultimate Pen Knife, and the passaround Survival knife I have in my care.

I will have to check them all on the return trip, but at least I have 'em now. I may just FedEx them back, though, as they are encouraging us to do that, rather than check extra baggage.

If you have other knives at home you might want to use a slower/cheaper shipping method to send your knives back. Priority Mail would save you a bunch. If you have over a pound to ship you need to drop priority mail at a post office rather than a regular mail box.

Man I was really hoping this was going to be relaxed and allow knives again, I check luggage them now, but since you can't 'Lock' your luggage it is a gamble on if they will be there on the other side, so I bring those that if I lose, I'll not cry over...too much!
Used to bring a small Sebenza in the pocket and a William Henry carbon fiber lancet in the shirt pocket, but of course, the world's changed.

Hmm wonder if there are 'custom' scissors being made out there ? two skeleton fixed blades with a screw to hold them together, maybe...some custom maker could make a fortune marketing that I'll bet! :)
