What does a heart attack feel like.?

I just had a pain in my upper back on the left side near my shoulder blade that hurt so bad that it radiated down my left arm. My left arm started tingling and was numb also.

Managed to get to the bathroom and crunched down two Aspirin. I felt like I was about to black out from the pain and was a little dizzy. Had Deb rub my shoulder for a bit and It eased off slowly.

Now I feel fit as a fiddle ?

Pinched nerve ?

Weird.

I'd say the first time that happens, one should get checked out just to verify it wasn't a heart attack. An EKG would be nice...

It could easily be the consequences of a pinched nerve, too. My spine and bones do crap like that to me all the time. I'm going through that with a shoulder right now. Reach wrong and the pain hits hard enough for a minute to make vision get fuzzy around the edges and almost make you sick. Sometimes it's in your side and you can't hardly breathe. I got used to knowing what was and wasn't a heart problem.

Mark, call your doctor or the ER as soon as possible. The doctor will need to run some tests for certain enzumyes and chemicals in your blood that are produced during a heart attack, to know for sure. The biggest killer of men is "denial". Thinking that it can't be a heart attack, stroke etc. Get it checked out man, do it now! I hope everything works out for you being healthy as an ox. -Matt-

That could have been a heart attack or angina, but maybe not since it went away pretty quickly. It would be nice to know for sure wouldn't it? I wouldn't waste any time in making an appointment to see a doctor. I would do it now!

Sweating? Short of breath?

Get it checked either way. Better safe you know.

I went to the ER with back pain and they said it could be a ruptured aorta. Thanks God it turned out it was GERD which was later found to be caused by a lazy gall bladder which is coming out tomorrow...

I hope it was just a piched nerve. I do have disc disease in my lower spine and am getting the start of a problem with the lowest thorasic disc.

I always thought you were very weak after aheart attack? I feel fine now. :)

Ya know, Mark, the more I think about this the more I agree with the others that you should do something immediately to verify or eliminate any cardiac events....

If it's "just" a pinched nerve than I can welcome you to the realm of the "top-to-bottom screwed up spine club"!

Crap.... I HATE going to the doctor....

I think I'll see how I hold up.

Always hoped the end would be quick :) Might just get what I asked for.

Gotta be a nerve.

no it doesn't have to be a nerve and no you don't always feel week after a heart attack. you ask for advice which you are given and then you ignore the right thing to do. :D spoken with respect of course. What if one of your loved ones had a similar episode? would you be as stubborn about getting them checked out?

We'll all hope it's a nerve buggin ya, too....ya stubborn rascal!

Good luck with it, Mark. I sincerely hope it was a one-off twinge.

Mark -- please don't do that.

Go. Just for us.

There's only one way to be sure ... why not find out?

Twenty years ago, my father didn't go. I lost him. :(

[If nothing else, listen to the wisdom of IG! I always do.]

A trip to the doctors now could save tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses later if it was a minor attack.

Hell, i'm only 25, but with the history of heart disease in my family (grand dad passed away at 53 from a heart attack, uncle has had bypass surgery at 39) and with my own known history of high chelestorol (even at my age) i went and had an EKG done after i woke up one night with sharp sharp pain in my upper left chest and arm. Turned out it was just a torn muscle between the ribs, but it's not worth taking any chance, ever.

Could have been a slight heart attack or angina; either way both are caused by ischemia to the heart. Heart attack probably would have lasted a little longer but some people don't even have any symptoms at all until it's too late. Of course it could have been other things too, but the tingling down into the arm is classic for a heart attack. I would go to the doctor immediately and get it checked out. With the heart time is of the essence and if it was a small heart attack you never know when it might hit again. They'll probably want to do an EKG and probably cardiac enzymes. They will have a good idea of what it was when they examine you. Do you have a history of heart disease or coronary artery disease? Hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, obesity, diabetes? How old are you? I wouldn't do it to save money, but I would do it because it may save your life.

No response from Mark.

I hope he's already on his way to the doc. :o

If anyone has his phone number and cares to pester him ...

You and me both, Old Physics...I advise people to let me page the ambulance or see their doctor for less than what he's described in his post. If there's one thing a person shouldn't do, it's to deny what their body is telling them. No shame in getting it checked out. Think of it as preventative maintenance! :) -Matt-

Several years back, I was building a work shop for a friend. I was working alone. I suddenly developed a severe pain in my left chest that radiated into the shoulder and down the arm. I was hard to breathe.I shut off the tools, got into the car, and went to the ER. They took me straight in. It turned out to be an intercostal tear (separated rib) and not a heart attack, but I was glad to hear that news. Better look sheepish than look dead. I hope Mark went to the ER. I know he is a bit stubborn, but Debbie will set him straight.
