Heart Attacks

Several years back, I was building a work shop for a friend. I was working alone. I suddenly developed a severe pain in my left chest that radiated into the shoulder and down the arm. I was hard to breathe.I shut off the tools, got into the car, and went to the ER. They took me straight in. It turned out to be an intercostal tear (separated rib) and not a heart attack, but I was glad to hear that news. Better look sheepish than look dead. I hope Mark went to the ER. I know he is a bit stubborn, but Debbie will set him straight.
Stacy

Thank you. I feel a little better now.

I wasn't lying when I mentioned my father. I don't want to see that happen to anyone else...ever. :o

for the last 20 years Ive been listening to story after story of family's that are with out one member or another because they did not go at the first sign of something being amiss. In short get checked.
Mother is a nurse, wife managed CAT scan for 10 years, 2 sisters are ER nurses and my uncle is a doctor. I'm scared to move after the dinner conversation at my house.

Crap.... I HATE going to the doctor....

I think I'll see how I hold up.

Always hoped the end would be quick :) Might just get what I asked for.

Gotta be a nerve.

I get burning down my arm but I also had EKG's after not being able to stand by myself.. the first is from degenerative like you have pinching nerves in my back the 2nd is from years of Migraines and was thought to have been TIA's at first..

I'm with you Mark ... going quick would be good
sucks getting old but the guessing is fun too, something like Russian roulette I'd say :)
the trouble is the wife still wants me a round for a while longer
let Deb make up your mind for you,, you old A$$ :D

I'd say the first time that happens, one should get checked out just to verify it wasn't a heart attack.

OP, I apologize that I didn't make it clear earlier that I had been through circumstances similar to Stacy, except mine was due to a pinched nerve in my neck. I suddenly felt like a horse had kicked me in the chest and my left arm went tingly then numb. I went to employee health and they rocketed me to the hospital, where they tested to determine it wasn't a heart attack. Scared the bejeezus out of me. That was in 1980 and marked the intial event in a long term repetition of issues like this created by a degenerative spine.

I've also been hospitalized a couple times for non-ischemic acute heart problems, and can assure that the pains can feel similar to the neuromuscular issues, so I strongly agree it's really important to get it checked out and treated promptly.

I've had 2 this year, followed by triple bypass.

Left arm tingly, then felt like dead weight. Slight shortness of breath, but to a manly man like me, no biggie. Went to the ER, and after 6 hours, they wanted to admit me "for a few days, just to run some tests". I know blood chemistry changes after a heart attack, and their lab should have picked up on it. So not being impressed with this hospital's care, I checked myself out, and a week later it woke me up from a sound sleep. This was the big one. This time to a Level 3 trauma unit and I was in and scheduled for surgery within 20 minutes.

This isn't something to mess around with...

What does a heart attack feel like.?

I just had a pain in my upper back on the left side near my shoulder blade that hurt so bad that it radiated down my left arm. My left arm started tingling and was numb also.

Managed to get to the bathroom and crunched down two Aspirin. I felt like I was about to black out from the pain and was a little dizzy. Had Deb rub my shoulder for a bit and It eased off slowly.

Now I feel fit as a fiddle ?

Pinched nerve ?

Weird.

I had a similar incident about two years ago while making a long drive home from visiting some customers. I went straight to the doctor and then to an emergency room. Turned out that I had a bulging disk in my neck/upper back. I spent nine months in physical therapy doing exercises to strengthen my back and take pressure off of the disk.

Now when I start feeling the pain or tingling, I get out those larger rubber band tube like things and do back exercises. It seems to be keeping me good now.

I know how you felt. I thought it was a heart attack too. It's best to have it checked out and find out what it is! Better safe than sorry.

Get it checked out NOW!
The stats aren't good.
For 50% of heart attack victims, the first symptom is Death.
My uncle felt dizzy on Wednesday, felt better, went downstairs on Friday and dropped dead. Seriously, it may be nothing, make sure.

Ditto to what everyone else has said Mark!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't screw around with this one!!!!!
Go get checked out now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope Mark's OK. I hope he made the ONLY right decision and went into the ER ASAP.

My father had a heart attack not long ago. I was with him when he had it. He felt intense pain in his chest that only started going away after he was in the ambulance getting that nitro-lingual spray or whatever it's called.

He said it was a 9 out of 10 pain, which is a lot since he's one hell of a strong and tough guy.

I hate even thinking about what happened but I'm posting just incase Mark hasn't gone yet, I implore him to go right now.
I know it's a guy thing to hate seeking ANY sort of help especially medical, I have been guilty of it too, trust me, but strong heart pain is too serious to let slip. I know that now more than ever. My father's heart attack shook me to the bone.

As Esav said, going quick is great but it doesn't have to be anytime soon.

Thanks for all the well wishes and jabs :)

I started to go to the hospital ....then I thought about it for a bit. When this happened I was sitting on the front porch holding a piece of wood with my left hand and filing it with my right for at least an hour. I figured if that's what caused it then doing the same thing should cause it again.

Sure enough after 30 minutes of the same motion I could feel the same pain coming on. I guess I should have started this thread with a different title like

"Damn a pinched nerve hurts like hell :)"

Sorry for all the hubub , but thanks for all the concern.

And if I'm wrong and I keel over , you can all say I told you so :D

Your mind can play games with you and start you worrying when things like this happen.

YOUR MIND ALSO PLAYS A GAME WHERE AFTER EVERYTHING IS OK FOR A BIT IT CONVINCES YOU NOTHING WAS EVER WRONG.

A trip to the doctor is a better bet than saying "Man a pinched nerve hurts like hell." I understand how you feel, but, the world needs more nice guys, not less.

Mark, it's good to see that you are doing well now! At least you "lived to file another day". ;) -Matt-

"Doctor, it hurts when I do this." :D

The frailties of aging are such a joy, aren't they?

I'm glad we don't have to break in a new Mod, Mark! :)

Don't worry about it, Mark.
Debbie is a good lookin' gal, and we will all come to the tool sale.
Take care, Bro.

I have absolutely no desire to say 'I told you so.'

Just be careful and pay attention to your common sense (and maybe your Mrs.) ;)

Mark, be careful. My small first one went away on its own. Only after a while of badgering from Sandy did I go to the ER...

If it happens again in the next two weeks or so, get your butt to the hospital, FAST! And start munching on the aspirin...

I wish you good health,

SPX
