I just saw this new one on Knifecenter and I love it! Are there plans for a left-hand version?

I doubt there'll be a left-handed version.

The DPx HEFT/F folder packs a lot in a small package. It has some serious competition in the Spyderco Techno which costs $50 less and is full titanium.

I was able to order a First Run HEAT/F for Techno-like street prices instead of MSRP. Should be here next week.

I'll do side by side pictures with others of the same general size and quality:

  • Curtiss F3 Compact
  • Spyderco Techno
  • Spyderco Leafstorm
  • Boker Albatros
  • Boker Pipsqueak
  • Benchmade 755 MPR
  • Three Sisters Forge CCT

My new DPx HEAT/F folder came in and after examination against other beefy stubby little folders I see that size and price wise it matches up directly against Spyderco Techno. I paid about the same for each.

HEAT/F is heavier at 4.12 ounces vs. 3.52 ounces for the Techno. This was surprising since Techno has all titanium handles whereas HEAT/F is G10 on one side. The titanium slab on the HEAT/F is much thicker and heavier. While the blade on the HEAT/F does not have the big Spydie hole to reduce weight it is a little shorter and the bottle opener reduces the weight a little.

Techno has a longer 2.5" blade of CTS-XHP whereas HEAT/F is 2.25" of Sleipner. Blade thickness is the same at 0.18".

The handle on the HEAT/F is a good 0.25" longer and the reason becomes clear when you hold it because you can get all four fingers on the handle but on the Techno the pinkie goes underneath. Also, the G10 affords a better grip since Techno has no texturing on the titanium handles.

HEAT/F gets extra points for the bottle / wave opener and a robust glass breaker.

Thanks for the short review RamZar. Which do you prefer of the two and do you notice a difference in the lockup?

Lock up is at about 20% on both.

I don't have enough time on the HEAT/F but it feels more secure in the hand due to larger handle and G10 side. I also like having a glass breaker.

Techno is buttery smooth right now, is lighter and takes up a little less space in the change pocket. Also, due to slick titanium on both sides extraction is smooth.

How user friendly is the DPx style wave opener? I've used and like the emerson version, but would love to know other good functional wave options were available.

The wave/bottle opener on the HEST/F and HEAT/F work just fine. I just tried the small HEAT/F.

Thanks for the review and the feedback...... I think this could be next on the bench.

The new DPx HEAT/F 3D Ti Limited Edition is available for preorder for $240 and is expected to ship on August 15th. Limited to 250 pieces and available only through DPx.

It has a nice 3D CNC diamond pattern titanium on both sides and Niolox Stainless Tool Steel is 2.26" long and 0.18" thick. Weighs 4.15 ounces.

Can the clip on the Heat be switched for left hand carry?
Thanks

I love mine. At first I thought of selling it, but its nice to have such a robust knife in a size that I can legally carry when I go into the Chi. The wave, bottle opener is great. People stare at me when I pull it out and its open, and then 5 seconds later I've opened my beer with it. I can live without the glass breaker, but I have to say the clip is far superior to the Techno's.

I checked with DPx and the new DPx HEAT/F 3D Titanium Limited Edition Pre-Orders are scheduled to ship on Friday, August 15th. Also, the 20% preorder discount will run out on August 15th.
