Heat Shielding Gel

I have done some plumbing work in my travels, and remembered using a gel to keep heat from traveling down a copper pipe we were soldering. We sprayed a gel on both sides of the pipe and did our work...

So I am thinking about softening the spine of a large chopper in O1, with a torch. Why not use this on the edge to help stop heat from ruining the HT?

Video of the product:

Input appreciated

Wouldn't it be easier to put the blade in water and have the spine out of the water?

Just playing with options and opinions... wife's gets angry when we use their baking tins for knife making!

Another trick is to use molded wet sand, you can shape it into a ridge and stick the edge into it. This holds the blade upright, allows you to set the depth of protection, and doesn't require the use of your cookware.

Give it a try.

I use the gel at work sometimes. It's not often, but sometimes a wet cloth just won't do.

The other option is the putty. It'd work to hold the knife as well. When I was an apprentice we did an experiment in the Union's training center. I held a piece of 3/4" copper next to where we wrapped it with putty and another apprentice brazed a joint without the pipe ever getting too hot to hold.
I'd say the putty would be the best bet.

Hard to believe , perhaps but a thick slice of potatoe works very well. Try it on a rod first and see what I mean. You will be able to hold the rod in your hand on one side of the potatoe and heat the other side red. Frank

3m cool gel is good stuff, works really well. Just don't get it anywhere that you are trying to heat, it will keep solder and brazing rod from taking.

The clay used to produce hamons will work to. The fresh by product produced from my cows will also work beside working great on chapped lips. :D
