Heat teating 416

If I make some pivot pins out of 416 stainless steel, do they need to be heat treated for wear resistance?

If yes, what's the procedure?

It's worth noting that Crucible's procedure is for their high-end 416R, made for rifle barrels. With ordinary 416 you may get slightly different results.

There is some more info (with temperatures in Celsius) here.

I'll wager that the recipe you come up with is something like this:
1. Heat to 1800º
2. Air-cool
3. As soon as the parts are cool enough to touch, temper at 300º-500º for 2 hours. (Higher tempering heats usually yield softer-but-tougher parts)
