Ok this is what I see on a 154cm blade I have had heat treated . I look at it under a 10x magnifying glass and the metal look like a broken window . I have finally sanded to 3000 grit and noticed that most of the crack marks are gone now. Is the scale from heat treat and cryo normally make the steel looked like a shattered window. ?????? It the first one ive ever noticed and I use a 10x on every blade. Is this a sign that the blade could fail under use??? Meaning snap. kellyw

Kelly,
That is frost on the blade. At -20 degrees up in Moose Jaw that happens.:D:D:D

Seriously, we need a bit more information.
How was the blade heat treated?
Did you coat the blade with anything, type of foil packet, etc.?
How smooth did you sand before HT?
How much did you sand off after HT?
Was the entire blade and tang covered in the pattern?

-20 geez he would have been out running arund in shorts looking for the air conditioning unit:D

Being new to this knife making game I am interested in finding out what was going on though

Gumbi, you live in Winter-pig.... it's -20 in the Summer.

Are they long striations at random angles or does it look as if they form a pattern? In other words... does it look like shattered "house glass" or "automotive glass".

Not that I'd be of any help solving your dilema... lol.

Ya Stacey thats kinda warm , it was -57 with the wind chill last week . You trying to scare me with -20 threats lmao. The blade was sanded to 500 wraped in foil and cooked then cryo for 24 hours. Ithen sanded to 3000 grtit and noticed between 1200 and 3000 it started to dissapear. When I did start to sand after heat I started at 320 then 500 then 1200 then 3000 structured abrasive belts all of them. The shattered window look was only on one side of the blade. Its a fillet blade and was originally 1/16 154cm stock.

Rick I forgott to mention its like the glass in one of them scary movies, just when your ready to jump out of your seat . lol

Could be many things, but was probably a surface feature of the foil packet. If it sanded off, there is little concern.

I was being kind to you at -20.
I should have said -40, but someone would have posted asking if that was Celsius or Fahrenheit. ( most of the readers won't get the joke).
