Hey guys, I'm wondering what kind of heat treat oil I should be using, I'm just using a regular veggie oil right now, which seems to work fine. However I've heard from a couple other makers that veggie oil won't work too well for anything over 1/8" thick at the spine, Id appreciate any advice on better oils to use and where to get them. Thanks,

It has more to do with what steel you are working with as well as the geometry of your piece as that will determine the required cooling rate. That said, most people would probably suggest Parks #50.

Parks 50 or DT-48 for water hardening steels, parks aaa or equivalent for oil hardening steels.

if you are a maker on a budget, use canola at 125F. it is easy to find, inexpensive, and fast. I know Parks 50 is 'da stuff', but if you are only doing a few knives a month, the lack of additives and stabilizers shouldn't matter. that said, I would probably get the Parks 50 if I was doing 1095 or W1. for oil hardening steels, canola should work ok. here is a reference http://www.dpi-journals.com/index.php/JPSR/article/viewFile/979/847
