I was looking at getting a heat treat oven. My question is should I get the sugar creek oven or the paragon oven? Is it worth the different between the two?
I will be heat treating ATS-34 and D2
Thanks for the info

Eric, I don't know about the sugar creek but you can't go wrong with a Paragon.I have had mine for a couple of years now and no problems. It's easy to program and highly accurate. I use D-2, A-2 , 154-CM and the occasional piece of O-1. I check all my blades( lately 5-10 a week) on a calibrated rockwell tester at the tool and die shop where I work and everything has always been dead-on.

And to throw another wrench in your decision, I know a lot of people that swear by EvenHeat ovens. They're decent in price and you can get them in lengths of 22.5" or more if needed.

I would second the Evenheat. Your have so much more space inside and I had questioned how a friend was always tweeking his blades when he used his PARAGON. I thought it was because his blades were so close to the heating elements.

replacement parts are also cheaper for the evenheat, that was the first thing I looked at when I got mine.

Father and Son kilns :D

had to do a little patch job to the front of the larger kiln. Message to self: Never leave a kiln at your mother's house where she can put stuff on top of it or things in front of it (which cause the soft brick to get scuffed up!)

The large one is a KF 27 in 240 volt with standard SET PRO controller and the small one is a KH 18 in 120 volt with the new RAMPMASTER 3 controller

Depending on who you order it from distributor wise, the shipping quotes will be different. They seem to utilize different freight carriers. I got one quote from one distributor that said $160.00 for shipping and then when I bought the 18" 120 volt from Tracy Mickley Midwest Knifemaker's Suppply :thumbup: he only charged me something like less than 90 bucks. ! The closer you live to Michigan the better ! Unfortunately i'm all the way out in California. They used DB Schenker for the shipment. Took like 3 days to California.

I just ordered the Evenheat 18 220 volt from Tracey, and the shipping was $155 to Idaho. He uses the cheapest of 3 quotes to ship.
