heat treat oven

I have no experience with sugarcreek, but the oven I had that used an infinite switch always had to be tended to keep accurate temperature (up a bit, down a bit).

Also, i see it draws 13 amps - meaning it should not be used on a 15 amp circuit. (Only supposed to load circuit to 80%).

Depending on the blades you make, you may wish a deeper chamber.

The first concern would apply to either of the ovens on that page. The last two only to the 120V model.

I presume the door has some way of holding it open. (Wouldn't want it closing on my knuckles while trying to get a blade out.

Is there a door switch to kill power when you reach in with metal tongs to remove a metal envelope or blade surrounded by live metal coils?

The price point seems very good - and I know they have been making ovens for some time. I think I remember reading that a computer controller was available.

Rob!

Hay Andrew, I have the same question in thread title elictricly dumb.
However I think I'm going to call sugar creek tomarrow.I want the 24" kiln with digital
controls in 230v. Goog luck Jerry

My understanding of the 80% rating is that was meant to apply to continuous loads of 3+ hours. In addition, it's written only for branch circuits that service more than one outlet, the left-over 20% is for other loads that might be connected. If you promise not to plug anything else in to the circuit at the same time I don't think anyone will come after you.

I have heard nothing but good things about them. They are a very reputable kiln company. I just emailed them about getting the digital controller and they responded immediately with price and a link to the exact controller that it would come with. Hopefully in a few months I will be able to swing one. For barely over $700 you can get a 24" digital oven. I reciently PM'ed balibalistic here on BF who owns one and he loves his.

Here is what Sugarcreek sent me:
Hi ,
The digital controller is available as an upgrade to the knife ovens. It adds $225.00 to the net cost. Here is a link to the manufacturers page on the controller tha we use www.ortonceramic.com/controllers/af3.shtml Hope this info helps Please let me know it you have any further questions. Thanks

sounds to me like i better get my taxes filed, so i can get that return check!!

thanks all, i think im gonna go with the digital control upgrade and the bigger of the 2 kilns @220v

Some of you guys need to buy one!! i cant be the only guy to always say "yes, they're very nice" :) honestly guys,it does everything you'd want it to,and does it well. my pal,Terry Guinn has been using the small one his entire knifemaking career

I am converting another 120v kiln to 220 because I cannot run many other tools in the shop when the oven is on. I am on a 20 amp breaker and starting a motor will pop the breaker. I just ran another 220v line in to give me more power. If you have two 120 v circuits coming in you wont have any trouble just make sure the grinders, buffers, drill press and bandsaw are on a seperate circuite, or just need to schedule some low amperage activities while heat treating.

Dont worry, i'll be joining you real soon Bali, in a few weeks I'll be placing my order, only thing holding me up is im to lazy to get the taxes done.

No not yet Andrew, I called them 3 times Tuesday and no answer. I don't know if yesterday was a holiday or not. Will try again today.
Jerry

thanks alot, i am still leaning towards getting one of these, hope it's not to good to be true,

thanks for getting back,

andrew

That seems strange! i had mine shipped accross the border for about $65.they told me about two weeks to build and had it in the mail with in 3 days.i think they just give you the max time it could take, depending on how busy they are!

Hey bali,

im gonna look into the shipping quote, and as far as shipping time, I agree 100%. since they obviously dont stock them on shelves, they cover there rear, and provide you with a max time frame.

Looks like a good deal on the oven. Im wonderin if you couldnt just get a controller from auberins for about 50 bucks and swap it out. One of you guys thats up on this might chime in.

im pretty sure the one they offer is capable of storing like 8 programs, with 4 possible temp settings per program, so you can set it up to run a heat cycle for s.s. and other steels that require temp fluctuation to achieve optimal results.

i could be wrong but i think thats what it said.
