Heat Treat problem?

hehehehe Seems you spelled most of it correctly. :p I'm not sure about "Portuegee", but hope you wouldn't blow that. Sounds like it's spelled different when Emeril's Mom says it. :D

Have a good week, my friend, and don't work too hard! Hugs to Helen.

Hi,
I get these every now and then. It is caused by the thinner edge getting cooled, and hardened ok, but the thicker spine held the heat and did not harden. I get it on thick spined knives that have a steep edge profile. PBC does make it more pronounced by slowing the spine cooling down some. I find being careful to catch the rising heat and "Fast to the bath" to be a big help.
I also use Tough=Quench at 120-130 degrees.
Enjoy, Ken

I thought about getting anal about the use of the word 'anal'. But that lead down some paths I didn't want to go.

I like that, Steve!

That would be "anal-squared", wouldn't it? I must admit, that doesn't sound comfortable at all. :D

Guys,
When I used the word "anal", which appeared in quotes and was accompanied by a smilie, it was in jest. I was merely being playful. It was not meant to be part of a derogatory comment. Hopefully it wasn't offensive to anyone.

Steve,
As far as getting "anal" about the use of the term "anal", shoot man, go ahead. It is easily discussed without going down any paths you don't want to go.

Sure, if you go far enough back, I guess it would stem from the term "anal retentive" which itself stems from some of the typical pshycosexual crap that Sigmund Freud is so famous for.

But my use of the adjective "anal" by itself has to do with adult personality or behavioral traits that include orderliness, meticulousness, strict adherence to rules, etc. It's common modern slang that has nothing to do with Freudian potty training. :D

I'm meticulous about a lot of things, and practice strict adherence to certain rules, but the use of the term temper line just doesn't bother me. I just got a good laugh off an unrelated thread in another forum, where Tai Goo stated, "This is why I try and steer clear of strict metallurgy... it just messes strict bladesmithing up". :D

Buck the system! Question authority!
Temper line! Temper line!
A transition line by any other name still looks sweet.

Whattsa matter, George, is this stirring up Freudian psychosexual imagery you don't want to address at this point in life??? ;) :D :p Come on, you can talk to us....

Just for the record, life is too serious to take it too serious, if you know what I mean. I was just having fun with all I said. If I offended anyone, I tender my apologies, of course, as that was not my intent. I am much more direct when I want to offend someone. No sense in subtlety. :D

Serious is reserved for things like my father in law laying in a hospital bed right now with them having drained close to a liter of infection out of a kidney this afternoon. Hopefully he'll pull through this, he's a sick man, thanks to the medical profession-al-grade screwups.

Nothing we say or do here about knives could ever be considered serious to me compared to stuff like that.

one question while were talking about 0-1.

I am getting a minor "edge twist" during HT. I think I can even it back out at the grinder. Am I grinding too thin before HT or is this normal?

Thanks in advance........

thanks sunfishman...I think I was closer to .040....I think I can true things up at the grinder though.......
