Newbie here,
I am making a knife for the first time and have a question. It is .18 O1 tool steel and I want to know if I need to file in the bevel and edge before or after heat treatment.
Thanks
Andy

The question is probably better off in the knifemakers section. You'll have guys who routinely work with the stuff be able to give you better answers. This section, generally speaking, is geared more towards users than makers.

Thank you
I'll post it there

I would run grind it down to .025-.030 prior to HT. Some will recommend thinner to ease finishing, but I would rather not worry about risking warpage.

Do you have the steel yet?
Are you doing the HT or are you sending it out?

I already have the steel.
And I'm gonna attempt to heat-treat at home with dual mapp gas torches
