Heat treat question

Hello all
I am attempting to make my first knife.
It's .18 thick 01 tool steel and I wanted to know if I need to heat treat it before or after I file in the bevel and edge ?

heat treat after you file. If you try to do it afterwards you will do nothing but ruin your files. Sharpen after you heat treat.

.18 is almost 3/16" so it would be a very very good idea to get your bevels in before heat treat while you still have a chance to work it soft. you could safely take the edge to .020 before heat treating.
