Heat treat question

Dan, I'm confused about that too. In foil you won't "burn off the carbon" if soaked too long You're using foil which prevents scale and decarburization. About the only thing you can do by over soaking is cause excessive grain growth .5 minutes soak seems far to short for stainless steel. The soaking dissolves the carbides and too short a soak will produce a soft blade. ..I still suspect either a furnace problem or the time taken to remove the blade from the foil.

I had my furnace tested at high temp and its accurate at low temp my furnace is out. According to the manufacturers website the soaktime is correct.

Possibly it could be the time from oven to qeunch. I am not sure but with the changes i have made i am getting good results. The more this issue is disscussed it seems that the time from oven to oil seems to be the likley culprit.

There may also be a few factors combined which lead to the "soft blade". I will try some different things to try narrow it down.
