Heat Treat Question

Thanks for all the feedback. That's actually an urban myth here that I have been hearing long before I even heard of BF.

I don't want to get this thread off-track, but I have a related question here:

Does the immersion of knife blades (e.g. VG-10, S30V, 154CM etc) into boiling water for cleaning and sterilization damage the heat treatment of the blades?
Not just immersion, say spraying of hot water onto blades.

Any reply (replies) appreciated. Thanks.

Use a sharp rock to tear apart your food if you're worried about hurting your knife.

You said any replies! :D

Anyway Wiki says "pure water boils at 212 degrees f." so you should be okay I'd guess by reading the other answers. I wouldn't boil or heat any of my good knife blades for a long time anyway. You could wash them in soap and water or use alchohol to sterilize them. The tips could get hotter at the bottom of the pan?? Falls back to "use sharp rock" answer. :D

Even immersion in boiling water, pure water, at 212 degrees will not affect the steel temper. At atmospheric pressure the temperature is limited to 212 until the water is all gone. However, if you add Electrasol then you have abrasion, corrosion, and potential handle damage to consider.

In many cases, it is generally safe upto tempering heat.
Many stainless steel are tempered relatively higher temperature (above 200C) with
some soaking time, which means you don't have to be worried about your blade hardening, singularity35.

Salt or other solutions of warmer temperature sometimes make best stainless steel eroded, which
I think is more to be worried.

Thanks, but I am not actually worried about my blade getting harder but rather losing the temper. Not so much worried as curious.
