Yes, the wood is placed inside the muffle towards the rear closed end, to create a reducing atmosphere inside and shield the steel from oxygen. Wood works better than charcoal, but charcoal will help a little.
The pipe can be welded or folded over tightly on the end to seal it up.
Does anybody use muffles with vertical forced air type forges? I have a 12" diameter pipe with 2" of wool and two 4" square ports across from each other. The burner is a good 12-14" below my main working area and there is about 8" of open space above that. It's nice because the way the flame swirls I don't have any obvious hot spots in the working area at all, but I still have a hard time getting even heats for some reason.
Anyway... just curious... I've only heard of the folks with venturi type horizontal burners using muffles...
I saw a long tubular burner smaller then that with lot's of tiny holes running the length of it a Home Depot yesterday. It's to long and wide for my mini-forge and doesn't have any threaded connection but it's $15 , think its worthwhile to buy? There was only 2 left and I'll be building a better forge probably in a month or two . It was kinda oval shape and long with a crimped end maybe 2" to 2 1/2 "wide and 14-16 " long .
