Some thing I'm wondering about.
I want to order a knife with a custom maker with a high end powdered steel.
Because the heat treatment for this steel is demanding it will be done by a specialised service.

Let's say it isn't a very common powdered steel.
Will this company follow the manufacturer's suggested cycle for heat treating only one blade?
Or will they throw it with some other similar blades and do a more common cycle?

Just wondering, I don't know at what scale these companies work and how much individual attention they provide?
If they are going to do a custom heat treat for your one blade, how much would it cost?

Yes ......or..... No.

You have given us a lot of vagque somethings....and no specifics anythings.
No one can answer a question with nothing specific asked.

What is the steel?
Who is the maker?
Who is the Heat Treater?

It was a general question how things take place.
But to give some specifics

maker:...............not yet determined
steel:.................Bohler K490 microclean or simular steels
heat treater:.......I suppose Peter's

You would send it to Peter's rather than a European HT ?? There must be good HTing companies there . While company HT specs are good the knife steels sometimes benefit from some tweeking to get the best performance .Do you research carefully. How about M390. Maker s in Europe can be very skilled to ,get on some European forums and find a good one .

Contact someone like Fred Haakonsen in Norway .He's a metallurgist and knife maker .He'll at least give you information and maybe more.

If you contact the guys at www.smederijatelieralkmaar.nl, they can hook you up. They have an exclusive collaboration with Magma Heat Treatment Services (Fabian Damanet). He is very knowledgeable about heat treatment of various types of steel, including Stainless. He is more into doing kick-ass heat treatments (and making Wootz etc) though than dealing with pesky customers ;) so he leaves that part up to the guys in Alkmaar....

I'm also active on some European knife forums and I have some customs made by European knife makers.
This one I would like to have made by an American knifemaker.
Noting wrong with the European colleagues
In fact I have now a knife on order by an Italian knifemaker.

I'm not settled on the steel, it could also be vanadis 4E or cpm4v
It would make sense to use the latter for an U.S. made knife.
Over the years I had some emails with Fred Haakonsen about knife steels.
Unfortunately his knives are above my budget.
But if funds were no problem the first ones I would buy are his :D

The best thing to do is ask Peters' direct. They're fairly quick at replying to emails and have always fully answered my questions.

Since Peters' is the company I use I'll go ahead and say from my experience they will follow the steel manufacturer's regime unless you specify otherwise. Your knife will probably be done by itself unless the heat treating regime is exactly like other knives they're treating.
