What would be the minimum thickness I could take a steel like 3v or PD1 without the knife warping during heat treat?

Assuming grinds are even and the knife is .170" at the thickest part of the spine and .025" at the edge (without being sharpened) and the tang being tapered to approx. 5/16" at the butt, would a 3V or PD1 blade survive heat treatment without warping?

Warp is a product of many things, the thickness being only one of them. Those dimensions should be fine. The thing on warp is to pre-plan how you will deal with it. I do my pre-planning by sending it to Brad at Peter's HT. On the blades I do at home, I have HT gloves, aluminum quench plates, and other straightening tools on hand when the HT is done to assure straightening as much as is possible between Ar1 and Ms.
