Heat treat?

I got an order to rehandle a knife for a guy....not a problem, and then he wants me to heat treat a blade he has ground himself. I do edge quench on carbon steel knives but this is some kind of stainless.....he cannot remember.
Would I be just wasting my time doing an edge quench and letting it go at that. I'm not really set up for stainless.

Maybe the he will remember where he got it and he can ask them. Stainless seems complicated and it might need a specific temp and quench.

Stainless steels are for the most part air hardening so edge quench won't really work.In addition you have to know the specific alloy to HT properly.

I would put the new handles on the knife. And pass on heat treating the stainless. Due to not knowing the kind of stainless you are dearing with. But that's me. Good luck with the order. ----------

If you don't know what kind of stainless he used and you aren't set up to HT stainless I would definitely recommend that you pass on this one. If he can find out the type of stainless, then recommend someone that is familiar with that type of steel and he will thank you in the end.

We just heat treated a D2 blade for a friend of a friend and remembering the old adage "no good deed goes un punished", I am waiting for the fall out.

I could test the blade for you, and together we could probably figure out what it is, but it wouldn't help if not set up to HT stainless. I will help if you want, but have to agree, probably pass....

I agree that edge quench won't do much for stainless - and the temps are WAY higher and require relatively long soaks. We've had a lot of blades lately of unknown stainless and we get them done, but it's a LOT of extra work - and not without risk to the blade owner.

Having said all that, if this is the guy's first blade it is special - and probably worth a good try.

I would send it back to him and tell him he has learned a valuable lesson ...KNOW YOUR STEEL TYPE.. next time he makes a knife to write down the steel type so that it can be worked with properly.

knifemaking is all about learning and sometimes a blade has to be the cost of a lesson.

Nothing drives me up a wall more than " I got some old rusty peice of shit steel that I think is from a another peice of shit can I make a knife with it and how do I heat treat it, what is the temps for P.O.S" .

Please guys just starting out knifemaking do a bit of research before you start, it will save a tonne of work later.

rant mode off
sorry

I think I'll do the rehandle and when he comes to get it I'll give it back with all of the suggestions given....

Thanks for confirming what I thought I should do!

Larry

unless you make the handle removeable i wouldnt put it on without the blade being heat treated.

That's one of the reasons I like this place. There is always something to remedy the problem. This will get it done without HT for the moment.

Thanks
