Heat-treated Titanium--How deep is it?

A question for those who know!

Once titanium has been heat treated to, say, light burgundy colored, how deep does this go?

In other words, can the color be taken out/down with careful sanding, then resmoothed? Would this be done with fine to very fine sandpaper?

I really like the knife in question, but the maroon bolsters are a little much...

Heat coloured Ti is only coloured on the surface, very thin, the top molecular layer only and can be removed by sanding or buffing.
