I have made a blade with some of the 19C27. I love the way this stuff grinds. Easy work with belts of files. The rub is that although my kiln will hit 1925 it takes a while so the preheats would be a problem and I have no dewar so no good cyro possible. This blade is for a customer who is in no hurry and I may just grind another.

What I don't understand is Sandvic says to just heat to 1940 for 3 minutes and then oil quench and they have a chart that shows a temper of 300f will get you a bit over 61RC and about 350 should get you 60. (http://www.smt.sandvik.com/) I could do this no problem. But a search here shows many think similar steels should be around 1925 -1950 to harden with a plate quench and then a cyro then the temper. I have no way to do a decent cyro. I am tempted to to the 1940f and oil using some of the PCB special. I have some foil also and was wondering what would happen with a oil quench while still in the foil.

Opinions please

Thanks.

PS at their site go to technical center, then on left click plus in front to strip steel, then 19c27, then built data sheet.

It's not really a complex steel like a S30V and cryo is not going to be that significant. It only has C and Cr for alloying elements. It's also not an air hardening steel .Best to heat in foil for 6 - 10 minutes then remove from foil and quickly oil quench.Give it a try.

Thanks, for the expert opinion. Well, I think tomorrow I will fire up the kiln and give it a shot. I am worried about the PCB special but, I promised to test it. I may just cut off another piece and make a small simple knife real quick and see how it does with that and foil this blade as it has a bunch of work in it. . This stuff does grind sweet.

If you don't have liquid nitrogen, go as cold as you can go, at least in the kitchen freezer. You can get dry ice just about everywhere though.
